Day 1: The castle and the Altstadt

Ride the Bergbahn to Heidelberg Castle (Schlossticket, 11 euros adult, 5.50 euros reduced, verify), a ruin since 1689, 1693, and a 1764 lightning strike, seeing the courtyard, the Great Tun, and the German Pharmacy Museum. Day 2: Philosophenweg and the University

Day 4: Speyer’s UNESCO cathedral

Train to Speyer (verify current routing at bahn.de) for the Kaiserdom, UNESCO-listed since 1981, begun in 1030, with a crypt holding four Salian emperors’ tombs. Tip: confirm current opening hours before you go.

Day 5: Schwetzingen Palace and gardens

Train or bus to Schwetzingen (roughly 20 minutes, verify) for the Electors’ former summer palace, worth it mainly for the gardens’ blend of French and English styles, plus a mosque-style pavilion. Tip: pack a picnic, the grounds are large.

Day 6: Mannheim’s Baroque grid

Train to Mannheim (likely under 15-20 minutes, verify) for the Mannheim Baroque Palace, one of Europe’s largest, the 1886-89 Wasserturm, and the Kunsthalle Mannheim art museum. Tip: Mannheim’s grid uses letter-and-number blocks instead of street names, download an offline map first.

Day 7: The Neckar Valley castle towns

Head upstream to Neckarsteinach, known for its cluster of four castles (most are ruins, only one is closed to visitors), by train or by boat if you’d rather see the valley from the water (verify current schedules and prices). If time allows, stop at the small walled hilltop town of Dilsberg or at Hirschhorn, whose hilltop castle now operates as a hotel and restaurant, on the way back. Tip: check the last return train or boat time before you set out, this stretch of the valley runs less frequently than the Heidelberg-Mannheim line.
