Day 1: The castle and the Altstadt
Take the Bergbahn from Kornmarkt up to Heidelberg Castle (Schlossticket, 11 euros adult, 5.50 euros reduced, verify), a ruin since French troops blew up sections in 1689 and 1693 and lightning finished the Ottheinrichsbau wing in 1764. See the courtyard, the Great Tun, and the German Pharmacy Museum, then walk down through the Altstadt: Hauptstrasse, Marktplatz, the Heiliggeistkirche, Kornmarkt, and the Alte Brücke with its Bridge Monkey. Dinner at a Gaststätte runs roughly 15-20 euros. Tip: walk down via the free Kurzer Buckel footpath rather than paying the funicular twice.
Day 2: Philosophenweg and the University
Walk the Philosophenweg for the free classic view before the crowds build, then spend the afternoon at Heidelberg University, founded 1386, at the Old University and the Studentenkarzer prison museum (check the HeidelbergCARD combo ticket, or verify the standalone price). Evening on the Neckarwiese. Tip: buy the Studentenkuss chocolate today at a proper confectioner, it’s the real Heidelberg sweet, not the imported Schneeballen sold around the Altstadt.
Day 3: The Heiligenberg and a Neckar cruise
Hike the Heiligenberg in the morning, past the ruined St. Michael’s Monastery and the sobering 1935 Thingstätte amphitheater, both free to reach. In the afternoon, take a roughly 50-minute Weisse Flotte panorama cruise past the castle and Altstadt (verify current price). Tip: pick a late-afternoon cruise slot so the light favors the castle in your photos.
Day 4: Speyer’s UNESCO cathedral
Take the regional train to Speyer, roughly 30 minutes to an hour away (verify current routing at bahn.de), to see the Kaiserdom, the Speyer Cathedral, UNESCO-listed since 1981 and the world’s largest surviving Romanesque church, begun in 1030. Its crypt, consecrated in 1041, holds the tombs of four Salian emperors. Walk Speyer’s Altstadt afterward before the train back. Tip: check the cathedral’s opening hours before you go, they can differ from the Altstadt shop hours around it.
