Heidelberg doesn’t need paid festival tickets to feel busy. These three events are the ones worth building a trip around, and all three cost nothing to attend, though hotel prices climb around them.

  1. Schlossbeleuchtung, the Castle Illumination. Roughly three nights a summer (2026 dates: June 6, July 11, and September 5, verify closer to travel, sources disagree between a two-date and three-date version), the castle ruin is bathed in deep red light around 10:15pm, followed by a 15-20 minute fireworks display over the Neckar. Up to 60,000 spectators line the bridges and the Philosophenweg for the view, entirely free. The July date, which usually lands in school holidays and warm weather, is the most crowded of the three, book accommodation well ahead if you’re targeting it.
  2. Heidelberger Herbst, the autumn festival. Held over a weekend in late September (2026: September 26-27, verify), this is a large free street festival across the Altstadt: a crafts and goods market, a flea market, a medieval market, and live music stages, drawing an estimated 200,000-plus visitors across the weekend. Free to attend, though the Altstadt gets genuinely packed.
  3. The Heidelberger Weihnachtsmarkt, Heidelberg’s Christmas market. Running roughly late November through December (2026: November 23 to December 22, verify), the market spreads across several Altstadt squares, Marktplatz, Kornmarkt, and Universitätsplatz among them, each themed slightly differently (verify current layout).
