Day 1: The castle and the Altstadt
Start at Heidelberg Castle, taking the Bergbahn funicular from Kornmarkt (Schlossticket, 11 euros adult, 5.50 euros reduced, verify at schloss-heidelberg.de). This is a ruin, not an intact palace, damaged by French troops in 1689 and 1693 and finished off by lightning in 1764, so budget time for the courtyard, the Great Tun wine barrel, and the German Pharmacy Museum, all included in the ticket. Walk down through the Altstadt afterward: the Hauptstrasse, Marktplatz with the Heiliggeistkirche, and Kornmarkt. Finish at the Alte Brücke and the Bridge Monkey statue for the evening light. Dinner at a traditional Gaststätte, Käsespätzle or Sauerbraten, runs roughly 15-20 euros. Tip: skip the funicular on the way down and walk the free Kurzer Buckel footpath instead, it drops you closer to the Altstadt and costs nothing.
Day 2: Philosophenweg and the University
Cross the river in the morning for the Philosophenweg, the classic castle-and-Altstadt view, free, best walked before the midday crowds arrive. Back in the Altstadt, spend the afternoon at Heidelberg University, founded in 1386 and Germany’s oldest, visiting the Old University and the Studentenkarzer student prison (check the HeidelbergCARD’s university combo ticket, or verify the standalone price). Close the day on the Neckarwiese, the free riverside meadow, for an evening picnic with the castle lit up across the water. Tip: buy your Studentenkuss chocolate, Heidelberg’s actual local sweet, at a proper confectioner today, not the Schneeballen stalls, that pastry is imported from Rothenburg.
