Johannesburg in 7 Days on a Budget

Safety first: Johannesburg has real crime risk (armed robbery, carjacking, smash-and-grab at red lights), but it isn’t a no-go city. Use Uber or Bolt instead of walking, especially downtown or after dark; take the Gautrain for the OR Tambo-Sandton-Pretoria run; keep car doors locked and stay alert at traffic lights; don’t display phones or valuables; and see Soweto and the inner city on a guided tour, not solo. Sandton, Rosebank, and Melville are the lower-risk side of the city. Check your own government’s current travel advisory before you go.
A full week covers the entire spine, history, Soweto, the Cradle of Humankind, Pretoria, a Pilanesberg safari, a recovery day, plus a bonus inner-city day before departure. If six days is enough, use the 6-day itinerary and drop Day 7.

Day 1: Apartheid history
Morning: the Apartheid Museum, allow 2.5-3 hours (roughly R85-R120, verify). Afternoon: Constitution Hill’s Old Fort and Constitutional Court. Evening: dinner in Melville.
Day 2: Soweto, guided
Full day: a guided Soweto tour covering Vilakazi Street and the Hector Pieterson Museum and Memorial. Evening: Sandton’s Nelson Mandela Square.
Day 3: The Cradle of Humankind
Full day: UNESCO-listed since 1999. Sterkfontein Caves reopened April 2025 after 2024 flooding; check current status (verify). Combo ticket with Maropeng runs roughly R175 (verify).
Day 4: Pretoria day trip
Morning: Gautrain to Pretoria, the Union Buildings and Voortrekker Monument. Afternoon: Freedom Park, jacarandas around October. Evening: Gautrain back for dinner.
Day 5: Pilanesberg safari
Full day: a genuine malaria-free Big Five safari inside an extinct volcanic crater, self-drivable in a standard rental car. Sun City sits next door for a future overnight.
Day 6: Green space and shopping
Morning: Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve (free) or the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden’s waterfall, a lighter pace after the safari. Afternoon: Rosebank Mall or a weekend market. Evening: dinner in Melville or 44 Stanley.
Day 7: Inner city and departure
Morning: the Ponte City tower, via the guided Dlala Nje tour (roughly R350-R450), which funds a community youth program and ends with a 51st-floor skyline view. Pair it with a daytime walk through Maboneng or 44 Stanley for street art and boutiques.
Afternoon: last-minute souvenirs at the Neighbourgoods Market if it’s a Saturday, or Sandton’s malls otherwise. Check out of your hotel with time to spare.
Evening: Gautrain to OR Tambo International Airport, Africa’s busiest airport, for departure. Build in extra time; the Gautrain is reliable but weekend bus connections to it can be limited.
