Kunming in 4 Days on a Budget (Daily Costs)

A 4-Day Kunming Itinerary on a Budget
Four days takes the 3-day itinerary in full and adds a last free-to-cheap day, museum and garden instead of another paid sight. Running total roughly RMB 450-550 per person on a shoestring budget. Day 1: Kunming City Core
Morning. Start at Green Lake Park (Cuihu Gongyuan), free, roughly 7am-11pm (verify exact posted hours). November through March, the lake’s black-headed gulls are the draw, best fed before 10am. Walk over to Yuantong Temple (RMB 6), Kunming’s largest Buddhist temple, an unusual layout where you enter from above and descend into a courtyard built around a pond, with 500 Arhats carved into the walls.
Lunch. A bowl of mixian, RMB 8-15, near Green Lake or the Wenlin Jie cafe strip.
Afternoon. Browse the Bird and Flower Market on Jingxing Street (free to walk).
Evening. Dinner near Green Lake; a grilled er kuai (RMB 5-10) if you’re still hungry.
Day 1 running cost (RMB, per person): Yuantong Temple 6 + meals ~50 + metro/bus ~10 = ~66
Day 2: Western Hills and the Golden Temple
Morning. Metro Line 3 to Western Hills Station, then the walk in, or the cable car from Haigeng Park if you’d rather pay for the ride. The scenic area itself is free; only the Dragon Gate grottoes (RMB 30), hand-cut into the cliff between 1781 and 1836, cost extra. The summit at Datian Pavilion delivers a genuine panoramic view over Dian Lake, a view and not a swim spot, since the lake’s water quality has been poor since at least 2009.
Lunch. Pack a snack or eat cheaply near the Western Hills entrance.
Afternoon. Golden Temple (Jindian), RMB 25, a genuine bronze hall rather than merely a gilded one, atop Mingfeng Hill. A 600-year-old camellia blooms here in February.
Evening. Mixian or er kuai back near your hotel.
Day 2 running cost (RMB, per person): Dragon Gate 30 + Golden Temple 25 + meals ~50 + metro/bus ~15 = ~120
Day 3: Stone Forest Day Trip
Morning. Bullet train from Kunming South Railway Station to Shilin West (about 20 minutes, RMB 18-29), then local Bus 99 (about 50 minutes, RMB 8-10) out to Stone Forest (Shilin), part of the South China Karst UNESCO World Heritage property , inscribed in 2007. Entry is RMB 130 adult (includes the Karst Museum) plus RMB 25 for the battery-car shuttle. Go early to beat the tour-bus crowds.
Midday. Budget 3-4 hours across the Greater and Lesser Stone Forest, Naigu Stone Forest (the section actually named in the UNESCO inscription), and the Ashima rock formation, tied to the local Sani-Yi legend. Lunch at a restaurant near the entrance.
Afternoon. Retrace your route (same train-and-bus combination, or the direct shuttle, RMB 45-60, if you’d rather trade cost for time) back into Kunming.
Evening. A last dinner before your free day; if it’s mushroom season (roughly June-October), an established, licensed restaurant is the safe way to try wild-mushroom hotpot.
Day 3 running cost (RMB, per person): train and bus round trip ~55 + entry 130 + shuttle 25 + lunch ~30 = ~240
Day 4: Free Museum and Garden Day
Morning. World Horti-Expo Garden, free, Metro Line 5 direct to the gate. 218 hectares built for the 1999 Kunming International Horticultural Exposition, with a Grand Greenhouse and dozens of country pavilions.
Afternoon. Yunnan Provincial Museum, free, Tuesday to Sunday, closed Mondays (advance WeChat booking may now be required, verify current rules). Roughly 2,500 years of Yunnan history across well-lit galleries.
Evening. Dounan Flower Market, Asia’s largest flower-trading market, free to walk and genuinely busiest after around 8:30pm once the wholesale trading gets going.
Day 4 running cost (RMB, per person): meals ~50 + metro/bus ~15 = ~65
Four-day total: roughly RMB 490-550 per person, more if you take the direct Stone Forest shuttle both ways or the Western Hills cable cars instead of walking.
Four days is the point where a genuinely free day stops feeling like padding: museum, garden, and market cost nothing beyond a metro fare.
