Kunming photo spots: free versus paid, straight up
Kunming’s best shot doesn’t need a ticket at all: gulls landing on Green Lake in winter are free, though two of the other three real photo spots here add up fast. - Green Lake (Cuihu) gulls, free. Black-headed gulls winter here roughly November through March, peaking December through February depending on the source. They come close enough to the shoreline for a handheld shot, no long lens needed. Feed them before 10am, when they’re most active.
- Dragon Gate / Dian Lake vista, free scenic area plus ¥30 grottoes. The Datian Pavilion platform delivers a genuine panoramic shot over Dian Lake and the city below. Go early, before afternoon haze sets in, for the clearest view.
- Stone Forest, ¥130 entry plus a ¥25 battery-car shuttle. Pinnacle-forest silhouettes, best shot early morning before the tour buses arrive. The cheapest way there is the bullet train to Shilin West (¥18-29) plus local Bus 99 (¥8-10), beating the ¥45-60 direct shuttle on price if not on speed.
- Dongchuan Red Land, free entry, but budget for a charter car at ¥200-500/day. Sunset at Luoxiagou (around 5:30pm), sunrise at Damakan, and front-lit terraces at Yuepu’ao around 8am, three named viewpoints spread across three separate routes: book a Dongchuan Red Land tour . This is the whole reason sources recommend an overnight rather than a rushed same-day return; the light is the entire point of going.
Is Dongchuan Red Land really worth an overnight for photos?
Yes, if photography is the actual goal. It’s 250km/3-4 hours each way, and a rushed day trip sacrifices the sunrise and sunset light that makes the color pop, the whole reason to go. Color windows are contested across sources, roughly late April to early May, late August to early September, and mid-November through December, with the color most vivid about 3 days after rain.
Which of these costs the least for the best shot?
Green Lake, by a wide margin. It’s free, central, and the gulls arrive close enough for a phone camera. Stone Forest and Dragon Gate both add real entry fees on top of transport, and Dongchuan adds a charter car and a night’s accommodation, so treat Green Lake as the one to shoot on any Kunming trip regardless of budget.
