Nairobi in 6 Days on a Budget (Daily Costs)

Safety note: Nairobi has a real crime problem worth taking seriously, mugging, carjacking, and smash-and-grab theft at traffic lights are genuine risks (the old “Nairobbery” nickname is fair, not ancient history), plus a background terrorism risk. That said, millions of safari travelers pass through every year without incident. Use Uber, Bolt, or Little instead of walking, especially after dark or in the CBD at night, keep car doors locked and valuables out of sight at traffic lights, and check your own government’s current travel advisory before you book. The one specific no-go area inside the city is Eastleigh and Kibera; the rest of the tourist core, Westlands, Karen, Gigiri, Kilimani, and Lavington, is fine with ordinary street sense.
The route, in short
Six days nests our 5-day plan’s Karen loop, national park day, and 2-night Maasai Mara flight extension, and adds a Nairobi city-sights day in between covering the museums and workshops that a 5-day trip has to skip. Our 7-day plan nests this same spine again and stretches the Mara stay to a third night.

Day 1: the Karen wildlife and culture loop
Book the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust ahead, the public window is a single roughly 11am-noon slot daily through the KWS Mbagathi (“Workshop”) Gate, a roughly $20/person donation (verify) separate from any park fee, and the actual place to see elephants on this trip. Follow with the Giraffe Centre (around KES 1,500 for 30 minutes, verify) and the Karen Blixen Museum, the real farmhouse behind Out of Africa (modest entry fee, verify). Use Uber, Bolt, or Little between stops, and close with nyama choma or a Carnivore restaurant splurge.
Day 2: Nairobi National Park and Bomas of Kenya
Start early for peak predator activity. Non-resident park entry runs roughly $80/adult, $40/child, plus a vehicle fee and a small online gateway surcharge (verify). Expect lions, black rhino, Masai giraffe, zebra, buffalo, and cheetah, four of the Big Five, no elephants. Stop at the Ivory Burning Site Monument inside the main gate, free with entry, marking Kenya’s 1989 and 2016 anti-poaching ivory burns. In the afternoon, Bomas of Kenya stages a live traditional-dance show representing Kenya’s roughly 42 communities (entry fee, verify current showtimes).
Day 3: museums, beads, and a rooftop sunset
Morning at the Nairobi National Museum and adjacent Snake Park, roughly KES 600 combined for citizens, non-resident pricing higher (verify, fees were revised in 2026). Cross town to the Nairobi Railway Museum, a niche but atmospheric stop on the Uganda Railway’s history, modest entry fee (verify). Add Kazuri Beads in Karen if time allows, a free factory tour of a women’s cooperative making ceramic beads, pieces from about $10 (verify). Close at KICC’s rooftop viewing deck, an open 360-degree platform over the CBD, around KES 400 (verify), best near sunset. Pack tonight for an early flight tomorrow.
Day 4: fly to the Maasai Mara
Transfer to Wilson Airport, Nairobi’s dedicated domestic and safari-charter airport in Langata, not Jomo Kenyatta International, for a scheduled flight on a carrier like Safarilink or AirKenya Express, roughly 45 minutes to a Mara airstrip (one-way fares vary by operator and season, verify before booking). Check in and head straight out for an afternoon game drive. Reserve entry adds a separate daily conservation fee on top of any accommodation package, rates vary between the Maasai Mara National Reserve and the private conservancies around it, confirm with your operator.
Day 5: a full day in the Mara
Dawn and dusk game drives bracket a rest through the heat of the day. If your dates fall roughly late July through early September, ask your camp about the Mara River wildebeest crossings, the single most dramatic sight the Great Migration offers, timing is never guaranteed. Outside migration season, resident lion, elephant, and often leopard sightings are all realistic here regardless.
Day 6: morning game drive, fly back, and depart
One last early game drive before checkout, then the return flight to Wilson Airport. Budget real transfer time from Wilson back across the city if you have an international departure from JKIA the same day, Nairobi traffic doesn’t forgive a tight afternoon connection.
