Day 1: Land, Set Up Your Base, One Free Prague Evening

Land, buy a stamped DPP ticket the moment you arrive (trolleybus 59 or bus 100 plus a metro transfer runs about CZK 40; there is no direct train or metro to the airport), and settle into Stare Mesto or Mala Strana, both a short walk from Hlavni nadrazi and Florenc, the two departure points for every trip on this itinerary. This itinerary is built around the countryside, not the city, so keep today light: a free evening walk to Old Town Square for the Astronomical Clock’s hourly show, then across Charles Bridge before the tour groups thicken in the morning. Day 2: Kutna Hora and the Sedlec Ossuary

Trains from Hlavni nadrazi run roughly every hour, take about 50 minutes, and cost CZK 100 to 140 one way. Buy the ticket to Kutna Hora mesto, not Kutna Hora hl.n., the stop that actually drops you in the historic town rather than a station a further local-train ride away. The Sedlec Ossuary, a small chapel decorated in human bone, now requires a timed online ticket booked through sedlec.info : CZK 220 adult, CZK 150 reduced, CZK 80 child. Pair it with St Barbara’s Cathedral in town for a combo ticket around CZK 360, and be back in Prague by early evening. This is the cheapest, easiest day trip within reach of the city, and the one worth doing even if you only have one extra day to spare.

Day 3: Karlstejn Castle

Trains from Hlavni nadrazi take about 40 minutes to Karlstejn village for CZK 150 to 200 return, then it is a 2.5km, 30 to 40 minute walk uphill to the castle gate, no shuttle available. Charles IV built Karlstejn in the 14th century to house the Bohemian crown jewels, and the interior is visited by timed, guided tour only, priced separately from the train fare and changing by circuit, so check current fees on hrad-karlstejn.cz and book ahead since popular slots sell out on summer weekends. Skipping the interior for just the walk and the courtyard view costs nothing beyond the train fare. Either way, head back to Prague for the afternoon and dinner in Vinohrady, cheaper than the tourist-priced restaurants around Old Town Square.

Day 4: Terezin Memorial

A bus from Florenc, Prague’s main bus terminal, takes about an hour and costs CZK 160 to 200 return. Terezin is a WWII Jewish ghetto and transit-camp memorial plus the separate Small Fortress Gestapo prison, and full entry runs roughly CZK 310 covering the main sites, confirmed at pamatnik-terezin.cz . This is genuinely heavy, not a casual sightseeing stop, so give it the pace it needs rather than rushing back for an evening activity. There is little to gain from a guided tour here since the on-site displays already carry the narration; going self-guided is both the sensible budget choice and the more respectful pace for this stop.

Day 5: Travel to Cesky Krumlov, the One Overnight on This List

RegioJet or FlixBus run direct, the fastest around 2h25, for roughly CZK 220 to 430 one way depending on how far ahead you book. Leave Prague by late morning, check into a budget guesthouse, and spend the evening walking the medieval core once the day-tour buses have cleared out, which is the entire case for staying over instead of rushing this one. This is the only stop on this itinerary priced and paced around an overnight rather than a there-and-back plan in a single day, and it is worth the one extra bus fare.

Day 6: Cesky Krumlov by Daylight, Then Back to Prague

Give the morning to the castle grounds and courtyard, free to wander, then the town itself: the river bends, the color-washed facades, and the streets that were jammed with day-tripping tour groups yesterday afternoon and are calm again this morning. The castle tower and staterooms are ticketed separately from the grounds; check current fees and slots at ckrumlov.info before you queue. Head back to Prague on an afternoon RegioJet or FlixBus service, the same CZK 220 to 430 one-way fare as the trip down, landing back at Na Knizeci or Florenc in the early evening.

Is Cesky Krumlov Worth It as a Day Trip, or Does It Need the Overnight?

It needs the overnight. Buses and the one direct train both run 2.5 to 3 hours each way, so a there-and-back day trip leaves only three or four rushed hours in a town built for a slower pace. Splitting it across Day 5 and Day 6, as this itinerary does, buys a full unhurried morning and evening there for the cost of one guesthouse room, not one extra bus fare.

Is 6 Days Enough to Skip Karlovy Vary?

Six days fits Kutna Hora, Karlstejn, Terezin and a proper Cesky Krumlov overnight comfortably, but Karlovy Vary and Bohemian Switzerland do not fit without dropping something else. Bring small CZK notes throughout. Rural ticket machines, village shops, and the ossuary gift counter do not always take cards, and a Cesky Krumlov guesthouse booked from Prague beats hunting for a room on arrival.
