The free half of Prague Castle
The Royal Garden, South Gardens and Stag Moat, open April through October (closed roughly mid-November through February so they can rest), cost nothing to walk through, and neither does the first courtyard where the Changing of the Guard runs daily at noon with fanfare, plus a quieter hourly guard rotation at all three gates the rest of the day. St Vitus Cathedral also has a free-entry zone near the door, enough to see part of the nave without a Circuit ticket. Between the gardens, the courtyards and that free cathedral glimpse, a visitor who never buys a ticket still leaves with most of the postcard shots.

Which Circuit is the best value if you only buy one?
Pick whichever circuit includes St Vitus Cathedral’s interior and Golden Lane, since those are the two pieces you genuinely cannot see from the free zones. Skip add-on extras like the Treasury or the Story of Prague Castle exhibition if your budget is tight; they add depth but are not the reason most visitors come.
Booking and avoiding the queue
Ticket-office queues in peak summer can run 30 to 45 minutes. Book a skip-the-line Circuit slot if you are visiting May through September, or buy directly on hrad.cz to avoid a reseller markup on an already-cheap ticket. Arrive at opening, or enter from the quieter Hradčany side rather than the main gate everyone funnels through for the noon ceremony.
Getting there and where to eat cheap nearby
Tram 22 (standard DPP fare, about CZK 40) runs directly to the Pražský hrad stop at the main gate; walking up from Malostranské náměstí in Malá Strana takes about 15 minutes up a genuinely steep lane, so budget the time and wear real shoes. Avoid the restaurants immediately at the castle gates, priced for the queue rather than the food.
