What costs money is largely optional: a handful of paid interiors, a combined Jewish Museum ticket, and whichever neighborhood you choose to eat and sleep in. What actually costs money in Prague
The paid list is short. A Prague Castle interior circuit runs roughly CZK 350 to 450 (grounds and gardens, roughly 6am to 10pm daily, verify current hours on prague.eu , are free regardless). The Old Town Hall tower climb, the only ticketed part of Old Town Square, runs about CZK 350. The Jewish Museum’s combined ticket, covering six synagogues and the Old Jewish Cemetery, is about CZK 600. A DPP transit ticket runs about CZK 40 for 30 minutes, CZK 150 for 24 hours, or CZK 350 for 72 hours. Beyond those four items, most of what fills a Prague itinerary does not have a price tag at all.
Which Prague neighborhood is cheapest to eat and sleep in?
Vinohrady and Žižkov both run noticeably cheaper than Staré Město or Malá Strana for food and beds, and both sit a few metro stops from the historic core rather than a long walk from it. Compare rates across neighborhoods on Booking.com before committing to the pricier historic-core option, especially around the Christmas markets (28 November 2026 through 6 January 2027), when rates in Staré Město climb hardest.
Free things worth building a day around
- Prague Castle’s grounds, courtyards and gardens, plus the free-entry zone of St Vitus Cathedral’s nave.
- Charles Bridge, no fee in either direction, best walked before 9am or after 7pm.
- The Astronomical Clock’s hourly show, free from the square below; only the tower climb is ticketed.
- The Lennon Wall on Kampa Island, a five-minute walk from the bridge.
- Petřín Hill on foot. The funicular is out of service through 2026, so the free walk up from Újezd, 20 to 30 minutes through orchards, is currently the only route anyway.
Is a Prague city pass worth buying?
Skip a blanket multi-day city pass unless your plan genuinely includes four or more paid sights a day. Individual attractions here run CZK 250 to 600, cheap enough on their own that a multi-day pass rarely earns back its cost on a museum-light trip, and the biggest sights, the Castle grounds, the Bridge and the Clock, are not on any pass because they are already free.
Where the tourist-price trap is
Czechia uses the koruna (CZK), not the euro, and “0% commission” exchange booths on Old Town Square or Wenceslas Square build their margin into a bad rate instead, often 10 to 15 percent below a bank rate. Use an ATM and decline any “dynamic currency conversion” prompt, paying in CZK every time. A purchased but unstamped transit ticket is treated as invalid, and plainclothes inspectors fine it on the spot, CZK 1,500 to 2,500. No-price picture menus cluster in restaurants directly on Old Town Square; walk two streets into Vinohrady or Žižkov for the same meal at a lower, itemized price.
