Reykjavik in 4 Days on a Budget (With Daily Costs)
Four days extends the 3-day plan with a City Card museum day and the Vesturbær neighborhood’s quieter pool, still without leaving the city. Golden Circle and Blue Lagoon day trips live in the Reykjavik, Iceland guide , not here. Shorter trip? See the 2-day plan. More time? The 6-day and 7-day versions add a rest day and Viðey Island.
| Day | Focus | Rough spend (1 person, excl. lodging) |

| Day 2 | Hallgrímskirkja, Harpa, evening geothermal pool | ISK 4,000-7,000 (~$32-56) |
| Day 3 | Whale watching, Grandi neighborhood, bar scene | ISK 12,000-20,000 (~$95-160) |

Book these before you go:
- A whale-watching trip : summer sailings sell out on the clearest days.
- Harpa’s guided tour if you want the Eldborg hall itself rather than just the free lobby: English-guided slots are limited.
- Your room : four nights inside the 101 postcode, booked early.
- Adding the Blue Lagoon around your flights? Book it 3-4 weeks ahead ; it’s a Reykjanes Peninsula stop, not part of this city plan.
Where to stay for 4 nights
Four nights is long enough that the 101 postcode’s price premium is worth paying for real: every day on this plan starts and ends downtown, and the only trip outside it is the short bus or Hopp scooter ride to Vesturbær on Day 4.
Day 1: land, walk the free sights, eat a hot dog
Check in, then walk the Old Harbour, free, home to former fishing warehouses now full of cafes and every whale-watching departure. The Sun Voyager (Sólfar) sculpture sits along the adjacent shoreline path, also free. Walk Laugavegur back toward downtown, then eat at Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur: ISK 880 solo or ISK 1,330 as a combo with a drink.
Day 2: Hallgrímskirkja, Harpa, and a pool instead of a spa
The Hallgrímskirkja nave is free; the ISK 1,500 tower is walk-up only, so decide before you queue, since it can’t be booked ahead. Walk Skólavörðustígur down to Harpa, whose glass lobby costs nothing to see without a concert ticket; add the guided tour if the Eldborg hall itself interests you. In the evening, Laugardalslaug runs ISK 1,430 for an adult , the actual local version of the ritual everyone flies in for at the Blue Lagoon.
Day 3: whale watching and the Grandi neighborhood
Morning boats from the Old Harbour run roughly 3 to 3.5 hours into Faxaflói Bay for minke whales and white-beaked dolphins; book ahead, since clear-sky summer days fill first. Spend the afternoon in Grandi, the former fish-processing district now home to the Omnom chocolate factory and the Marshall House galleries. In the evening, Kaffibarinn’s happy hour runs daily from 15:00, draft beer from ISK 1,050.
Day 4: a City Card museum day and the Vesturbær pool
Pick one museum the Reykjavik City Card covers, the National Museum of Iceland or the Saga Museum are the usual picks, and use the card’s included Strætó rides to get there. In the afternoon, cross to Vesturbær for Vesturbæjarlaug, a smaller, more local pool than Laugardalslaug and worth the short trip for a quieter version of the same ritual. Finish with a last walk down Laugavegur for souvenirs before your departure.
Do you need the Reykjavik City Card for this itinerary?
Only if Day 4’s museum plan expands past one stop. At ISK 5,500 for 24 hours, the card pays for itself once you add a museum, a pool and the bus rides between them; note it also covers the Viðey Island ferry if a longer trip has room to add that stop. Skip it if you’re only doing one museum and one pool, since paying separately costs about the same.
Is 4 days too long for just the city?
Not if you use the extra day on something other than repeating Day 1 or 2. Four days fits a real museum day and a second, quieter pool without every hour being booked around a paid attraction, which is the trap a rushed 2-day trip falls into. A visitor who also wants a Golden Circle day should add that as a fifth day on the Reykjavik-as-a-base itineraries, not squeeze it into this city-only plan.
Vesturbæjarlaug on Day 4 is the pool locals actually recommend over Laugardalslaug once you’ve tried both. It costs the same, draws a smaller crowd, and it’s the clearest sign this itinerary spent its extra day well.
