Day 1: Land, base on the coast, see Fira and Oia
Land at JTR or Athinios and settle into a coast base in Kamari or Perissa, EUR 70 to 200 a night. Bus into Fira, walk the caldera-edge lanes, take the cable car down to the Old Port for EUR 10, then bus on to Oia for the blue-domed churches and Ammoudi Bay before dinner.
Day 2: A caldera sunset cruise
A caldera sunset catamaran cruise, roughly EUR 70 to 160 a person, covers the Nea Kameni volcano and the Palea Kameni hot springs along with the sunset. Skip it for Imerovigli or Skaros Rock instead if you’d rather save the money, since Day 5 gives you that view anyway.
Day 3: Akrotiri and Red Beach

Start early from Fira and walk the roughly 10-kilometre caldera-rim path to Oia, 3 to 4 hours at a comfortable pace through Firostefani and Imerovigli, the trail’s highest point. It costs nothing beyond water and decent shoes; the second half past Imerovigli has no shade, so carry more water than you think you need. Rather than fighting the crowd at Oia’s castle for sunset, stop short at Imerovigli or the short detour out to Skaros Rock, a ruined Venetian fortress perch with the same westward view and a fraction of the people.
Is the Fira to Oia walk worth doing on a budget trip?
Yes, more than almost anything else on this list: it’s free, it covers the same caldera views a paid cruise gives you from the water, and it ends at the same village the crowds pay tour operators to reach by bus. Budget the whole afternoon and don’t rush the second half in midday heat.
Do you need a rental car by day 5?
Not necessarily. The KTEL bus network covers everything on this itinerary except Red Beach and the wineries comfortably, and the caldera walk is done on foot by design. A rental car or ATV, roughly EUR 25 to 70 a day, only earns its cost if you want to reach several beaches or villages in one day without waiting on bus timetables.
Book the cruise and the Akrotiri ticket before you land; the caldera walk needs nothing but an early start and can be moved to whichever day has the best weather.
