Three Days in Trinidad and Tobago: Port of Spain and the Coast
Three days buys you one island done properly, not two done badly. This route stays on Trinidad: Port of Spain’s Savannah and street food, a Maracas Bay beach day, and a sunset scarlet ibis tour at Caroni. Everything below runs in Trinidad and Tobago dollars (TTD, roughly TT$6.8 to the US dollar), not the Eastern Caribbean dollar used on most neighboring islands.

Day 1: Port of Spain Arrival and the Savannah
Fly into Piarco International Airport (POS) on Trinidad’s east side, roughly 25-40 minutes from Port of Spain depending on traffic. A dispatcher taxi at the terminal runs about TT$350-500 (roughly US$52-75) daytime to the city center, with a surcharge after 10pm. Once you’re settled, most of Port of Spain is walkable. Spend the afternoon at Queen’s Park Savannah, a free public green space, and walk past the Magnificent Seven, the ornate mansions built 1902-1910 along its western edge; Stollmeyer’s Castle and Whitehall are the two easiest to spot from the street. For dinner, find a doubles vendor instead of a hotel restaurant: two pieces of fried bara sandwiching curried chickpeas, about TT$10-15 (roughly US$1.50-2.20) each, sold from carts across St. James. Trinidad is also the birthplace of the steelpan, calypso and soca , and St. James is where a good chunk of that nightlife still plays out after dark. Hotel prices spike hardest around Carnival, next up 8-9 February 2027 per the National Carnival Commission ; book early if that’s your window, or avoid it if it isn’t.
Day 2: Maracas Bay and Bake and Shark
Maracas Bay is Trinidad’s best-known beach, about 40 minutes from Port of Spain over the Northern Range on Saddle Road. A maxi-taxi covers the route for roughly TT$4-10 (about US$0.60-1.50) each way from a known stand; ask your hotel which stand to use, since a private taxi for the same round trip costs a good deal more. The beach is free. The real draw is the row of bake and shark stalls along the sand, Richard’s is the best known, where a fried shark sandwich in fried bake bread costs about TT$40-45 (roughly US$6-7). Order it with the tamarind and pepper sauces on the side and eat it on the sand; there isn’t much reason to stay much past sunset here.
Day 3: Caroni Bird Sanctuary at Sunset
Book a licensed boatman for the Caroni Bird Sanctuary sunset tour, a roughly 9,700-acre mangrove wetland just south of Port of Spain. Boats leave around 3:30-4pm for a 2.5-3 hour tour timed to catch thousands of scarlet ibis, Trinidad and Tobago’s national bird, returning to roost in the mangroves at sunset. Pricing varies a lot by operator and group size; budget roughly TT$150-500 (about US$22-75) per adult and confirm the rate directly with the boatman before you commit.
This is also the honest ceiling for a 3-day trip. Getting to Tobago and back needs either a 3.5-4 hour ferry crossing or a short flight, plus settling-in time on the other end, and squeezing that into a trip this short just adds cost and stress for a half-day at a beach. Can I see Tobago on a 3-day Trinidad and Tobago trip?
Not really, and pretending otherwise makes for a rushed, expensive add-on. The ferry alone runs 3.5-4 hours each way; the air bridge is closer to 20 minutes but still eats a half-day once you add airport time on both ends. Three days works far better as a focused Trinidad trip, with Tobago booked as its own visit.
Is Trinidad and Tobago safe to visit right now?
The US State Department rates the country Level 3, Reconsider Travel, citing gang-related crime concentrated in specific Port of Spain neighborhoods and a State of Emergency that has run through most of 2026. Tobago is consistently rated calmer and isn’t covered by the same warnings. Use registered taxis after dark in Port of Spain, and check the current advisory before you book.
Do I need a rental car in Port of Spain?
No. Port of Spain’s traffic and limited parking make a car more hassle than help for a 3-day trip built around the city, Maracas and Caroni. Maxi-taxis, route taxis and walking cover this itinerary fine; save the rental car decision for a Tobago add-on, where it actually pays off. Trinidad and Tobago also drives on the left, worth knowing before you book one anywhere on either island.
