Seven Days in Trinidad and Tobago: The Full Two-Island Loop
Seven days is the shortest realistic loop of both islands: Port of Spain, Maracas and Caroni on Trinidad, then the crossing to Tobago for the reef, the rainforest and a quiet beach, on the same spine as the 6-day itinerary with one more day tacked on. Everything below runs in Trinidad and Tobago dollars (TTD, roughly TT$6.8 to the US dollar).

Day 1: Port of Spain Arrival and the Savannah
Fly into Piarco International Airport (POS), roughly 25-40 minutes from Port of Spain. A dispatcher taxi at the terminal runs about TT$350-500 (roughly US$52-75) daytime to the city center. Spend the afternoon at Queen’s Park Savannah, a free public green space, and walk past the Magnificent Seven, the ornate mansions built 1902-1910 along its western edge. For dinner, find a doubles vendor: two pieces of fried bara sandwiching curried chickpeas, about TT$10-15 (roughly US$1.50-2.20) each, sold from carts across St. James, in the birthplace of steelpan and soca . Hotel prices spike hardest around Carnival, next up 8-9 February 2027 per the National Carnival Commission ; book early if that’s your window.
Day 2: Maracas Bay and Bake and Shark
Maracas Bay is Trinidad’s best-known beach, about 40 minutes from Port of Spain over the Northern Range on Saddle Road. A maxi-taxi covers the route for roughly TT$4-10 (about US$0.60-1.50) each way; a private taxi for the round trip costs a good deal more. The beach is free. The row of bake and shark stalls along the sand, Richard’s is the best known, sells a fried shark sandwich in fried bake bread for about TT$40-45 (roughly US$6-7).
Day 3: Caroni Bird Sanctuary at Sunset
Book a licensed boatman for the Caroni Bird Sanctuary sunset tour, a roughly 9,700-acre mangrove wetland just south of Port of Spain. Boats leave around 3:30-4pm for a 2.5-3 hour tour timed to catch thousands of scarlet ibis, the national bird, returning to roost in the mangroves at sunset. Pricing varies a lot by operator; budget roughly TT$150-500 (about US$22-75) per adult and confirm the rate directly with the boatman.
Day 4: Crossing to Tobago
From Port of Spain you have two ways across: the TTITCo fast ferry (Port of Spain Ferry Terminal to Scarborough, roughly 3.5-4 hours, TT$75 one-way economy adult, about US$11) or the Caribbean Airlines air bridge (Piarco to Crown Point, about 20 minutes flight, realistically US$50-100 one-way once you actually book past the promotional fare). With seven days total, the ferry’s savings are easy to justify unless you’re arriving with a tight window. Land near Crown Point , minutes from the Crown Point/Store Bay/Pigeon Point strip, and spend the afternoon at Store Bay (free) or Pigeon Point (TT$20 adult, about US$3).
Day 5: Buccoo Reef and the Nylon Pool
Book a half-day glass-bottom boat tour out of Store Bay to Buccoo Reef and the Nylon Pool, a shallow, clear sandbar pool out in open water. The standard trip runs about 3 hours for roughly US$70 (about TT$500) per person, with an optional stop at No Man’s Land beach for another US$50 (about TT$350). Confirm whether transfers and gear are included in your quoted price before paying, since operators bundle them differently.
Day 6: Main Ridge Forest Reserve and Argyle Falls
Main Ridge Forest Reserve, established in 1776, is the oldest legally protected forest reserve in the Western Hemisphere, not a marketing claim. Hire a guide at the reserve for the Gilpin Trace trail; signage is limited, and a guide’s local knowledge is worth the small extra cost for spotting some of the roughly 210 recorded bird species, including the Tobago-endemic white-tailed sabrewing hummingbird. In the afternoon, drive to Argyle Falls near Roxborough (entry TT$60, about US$9, including a snack bar and restrooms), a 15-20 minute walk in to a multi-tier waterfall; the site closes at 5pm. Day 7: Englishman’s Bay and the Return Crossing
Spend the morning at Englishman’s Bay, a quiet, mostly undeveloped beach on Tobago’s leeward coast with a couple of small food shacks and no entrance fee, a deliberate contrast to Pigeon Point’s crowds. In the afternoon, cross back to Trinidad, since ANR Robinson’s own direct international service is limited and most outbound international flights still route through Piarco. If you have an evening international departure, take the air bridge back; if your flight isn’t until the next morning, the ferry saves the fare difference and gets you to Piarco with time to spare either way. Confirm your return crossing before this last day, not after; both sell out fastest right around Carnival and Tobago’s July-August peak.

Should I take the ferry or the air bridge to Tobago?
The ferry runs TT$75 one-way (about US$11) but takes 3.5-4 hours; the air bridge takes about 20 minutes but realistically costs US$50-100 one-way past the promotional fare. Over a full week, the ferry’s savings are easy to justify on at least one leg, unless a tight connection on either end forces the flight. Bringing a rental car across means the ferry either way, since only its cargo vessel carries one unaccompanied.
Is Trinidad and Tobago safe to visit right now?
The US State Department rates the country Level 3, Reconsider Travel, citing gang-related crime concentrated in specific Port of Spain neighborhoods and a State of Emergency that has run through most of 2026. Tobago is consistently rated calmer and isn’t covered by the same warnings. Use registered taxis after dark in Port of Spain, and check the current advisory before you book.
What does a full week here actually cost per day?
Outside the two ferry or flight crossings, TT$75-680 (about US$11-100) depending on which you pick, the daily spend is modest: doubles and maxi-taxis run a few TT dollars, Maracas Bay and Englishman’s Bay are free, and the two paid tours, Caroni and Buccoo Reef, are the real line items at roughly TT$150-500 and TT$500-850. A Tobago rental car adds TT$230-350 a day if you take one.
