Trondheim in 4 Days: Rockheim to Stiklestad

4 days is the first length that earns a real day trip
This adds one thing to the 3-day core that a shorter trip can’t justify: a full day out at Stiklestad, the actual battlefield behind Nidaros Cathedral’s story. With even more time, the 5-day itinerary keeps Stiklestad and adds Røros on top.
Day 1: Nidaros Cathedral and Midtbyen
Nidaros Cathedral, the world’s northernmost medieval cathedral, built over St. Olav’s grave, entry roughly NOK 120-150 (verify), tower climb (summer only) roughly NOK 70. The Archbishop’s Palace next door holds the crown regalia on a separate ticket. Spend the rest of the day walking Midtbyen and the Torvet.

Day 2: Bakklandet and Kristiansten Fortress
Cross the Gamle Bybro (1681) into Bakklandet, free to wander, and try the Trampe bicycle lift (1993) at Brubakken. Climb to Kristiansten Fortress for free views over the city and fjord.

Day 3: Munkholmen and Rockheim
Take the summer ferry from Ravnkloa to Munkholmen island (roughly NOK 95, verify), layered with a Viking-age execution site, a monastery, and a state prison. In the afternoon, visit Rockheim, Norway’s national museum of pop and rock music, roughly NOK 130-200 (verify).

Day 4: Stiklestad, the battle behind the cathedral
Stiklestad, about 90km and 1.5 hours north of Trondheim, is where King Olav II Haraldsson died in battle on 29 July 1030 and was made a saint within a year. The Stiklestad National Cultural Centre covers the battle with dioramas and a short film, next to the 1180 Stiklestad Church and a 30-building folk museum. Entry runs roughly NOK 150-200 (verify); go by scheduled bus or rental car, budgeting return transport at roughly NOK 200-400 (verify).
