A high-speed rail ticket out of Beijing opens up three genuinely different multi-day trips, and none of them cost as much as the flight equivalent.
The Golden Triangle: Beijing, Xi’an, Shanghai (7-10 days)
High-speed G-trains link each leg multiple times daily, with Xi’an running 4 to 6.5 hours from Beijing depending on the service. This is a circuit built for an overnight-anchored pace rather than a rushed add-on; trying to fold Xi’an’s Terracotta Army into a single long day from Beijing means more time on the train than at the site. The Northern Dynasties circuit: Datong and Pingyao (5-7 days)
Datong’s Yungang Grottoes and Hanging Temple pair with the walled banking town of Pingyao for a route built around Buddhist and Silk Road history rather than imperial Beijing. Pingyao runs roughly 4 hours from Beijing by rail, CNY 226 to 312 depending on class, genuinely an overnight-or-longer stop rather than a day trip squeezed in and out. The Imperial Retreat loop: Chengde (3-4 days)
About an hour out by high-speed rail, Chengde holds the Qing dynasty’s summer palace and the “Eight Outer Temples” complex built around it. It pairs naturally with Jinshanling on the way there or back, since both sit in the same general direction northeast of the city, which keeps a 3 to 4 day loop from feeling like two separate errands. Book a room in Chengde ahead of a national holiday week, when both the town and the rail seats fill fast.
What doesn’t belong here
A single Great Wall section, the Ming Tombs or Tianjin are all genuine same-day trips from Beijing, not multi-day material; padding an itinerary with an overnight stay at any of them mostly just adds a hotel bill without adding much to see. The verdict on cost
Pingyao is the cheapest overnight circuit by rail fare, Chengde the shortest to reach, and the Golden Triangle the most expensive and the longest, closer to a proper vacation than a side trip. Buy rail tickets as soon as dates are fixed. Seats on the popular Xi’an and Pingyao services sell out days ahead during Chinese national holidays, well before the hotel does.
