Chiang Mai Family Plans, Half-Day and Full-Day
Sorting Chiang Mai’s family activities by how much of a day they eat makes planning easier than sorting by theme. A few fill a whole morning, one needs a full day on its own, and one only works after dark.
Half-day: Bua Tong Sticky Waterfalls
Free, and reliably the best value on this list. Kids scramble barefoot up the calcium-carbonate waterfall tiers, sixty kilometers north on Highway 1001, without the usual algae slip of a normal waterfall, then cool off in shallow spring-fed pools below. Open daily 08:00 to 17:00; bring a picnic, since there is little food on site.
Half-day to full day: Pongyang Jungle Coaster
In Mae Rim, two-person alpine coaster sleds run down a one-kilometer steel track with a manual handbrake for speed control; kids 8 and older can ride alone, younger children ride with a parent. Full day: Grand Canyon Water Park
A former limestone quarry in Hang Dong now holds a floating aqua park with inflatable obstacle courses, floating climbing walls, slides, and a dedicated children’s splash zone, all under certified lifeguards with mandatory life jackets. The standard pass runs about 950 THB and includes park entry, a life jacket, and one zipline ride; open daily 09:00 to 18:00 (grandcanyon-waterpark.com ). Plan for the whole day: between the drive out and the queue for the cable run, there is little time left for anything else.
Evening only: Chiang Mai Night Safari
Open-air tram rides through nocturnal habitats in Hang Dong cover the Savanna Safari and Predator Prowl zones, with active giraffes, zebras, white rhinos, and lions visible after dark, plus a water and laser fountain show. Open daily 11:00 to 22:00, and worth pairing with an earlier free or half-day stop rather than a whole day on its own.
What to leave off the list
Tiger Kingdom, in either its Mae Taeng or Mae Rim location, is not a safe or ethical stop: 72 captive tigers died there in February 2026 from a disease outbreak. Chiang Mai Zoo’s panda house sits empty until 2027, so a trip built around seeing a panda will disappoint.
The verdict
