Couples Escapes in Tunisia
Advice, 31 October 2026. Look up the latest US State Department and UK FCDO advice before you book, because some border and military zones are closed to tourists. The US lists Tunisia at Level 2, and the FCDO (update of 24 July 2026) advises against travel to several border and military areas. The couples’ escapes below are in Tunis, the Gulf coast, the oasis south and Djerba.
An evening above the Gulf
Start with Sidi Bou Said. By late afternoon the day trips have gone, and the car-free lanes of white walls and blue doors are calm. Choose a cushioned terrace at Cafe Sidi Chabaane, known as Cafe des Delices, or at Cafe des Nattes, and order mint tea with pine nuts. For a night in the village, La Villa Bleue appears on booking listings as a boutique hotel. Compare current rates before you commit.
Staying in a medina house
Tunis has restored town houses where a plain door opens onto a courtyard with fountains and tiles. Dar El Jeld Hotel and Spa is listed with a traditional hammam and a restaurant with rooftop views. Dar Ben Gacem is another listed heritage house. Contact them to confirm that rooms and spa times suit your dates.
Time for two in a spa
Coastal hotels at Gammarth, Hammamet and Djerba run seawater spas with massage for couples. Local hammams work differently, as women and men use them at separate times, so a hotel spa is the better choice if you want to share the experience.
A night in the Sahara
Anantara Sahara Tozeur Resort and Villas sits on the edge of the dunes, with villas that have their own pools. It was listed and Michelin-keyed in 2025, so check that it is open and what it offers for your dates. Tented camps in the dunes around Douz and Tembaine promise beds, candlelit dinners and star-filled skies. Camp Mars shows on booking sites with conflicting location details and is reachable by 4WD only, so settle the route and transfer in writing. Travel with a licensed local operator in the cooler months from October to April.
The salt pan between Tozeur and Kebili, Chott el Djerid, can only be crossed safely on the P16 road. The mud beneath the crust swallows vehicles, and the water that appears in winter is a thin, salty film that nobody boats on or swims in.
Djerba at an easy pace
Away from the resort strip, Djerba has whitewashed menzel houses with gardens and courtyards, and calm beaches. Dinner by the fishing harbour at Houmt Souk makes a good last night. The island is over 500 km from Tunis, so it works best as a flight or as the end of a longer route.
Etiquette for couples
Holding hands passes without comment in Tunis and the resorts. Kissing and embracing are out of place in medinas, near mosques and in country towns. Cover shoulders and knees on old-town walks.
Money and timing
Pay in Tunisian dinars, bring a bank card and keep exchange slips. Spring and autumn suit most of the country, and winter is the desert’s season.
