Couples Travel in Laos
Safety note as of October 2026: British advice is to avoid all but essential travel to Xaisomboun Province. Unexploded ordnance still lies in rural Laos, so keep to marked trails. Methanol has been found in drinks, even at licensed venues in tourist areas, so order sealed bottles and refuse free shots. Rivers cause drownings and the Mekong is not safe for swimming. See the UK Foreign Office and travel.state.gov for current advice.
Romance in Laos is understated. There is no coastline, no resort belt and no honeymoon industry, so couples build a trip from a handful of good dinners, a river evening and some early mornings. Luang Prabang is the natural base. Prices are quoted in Lao kip (LAK), about 22,000 to 22,500 to the dollar.
Candlelit meals
- Tamarind. Lao tasting dinners by the Nam Khan. The restaurant is closed on Sundays. Hours and booking details are on the Tamarind site .
- Manda de Laos. Tables sit on pavilions that surround three lotus ponds. This is fine dining at fine-dining prices, and reservations are advised.
- Dyen Sabai. A riverside Lao barbecue on the far bank of the Nam Khan. You reach it over a seasonal bamboo bridge or by boat. Booking sites show hours of 10:00 to 23:30, so call ahead to confirm.
Evening on the Mekong
A sunset cruise out of Luang Prabang costs from about USD 18 with no meal, and USD 45 or more with dinner and live music. Operators differ, so compare what each includes. Remain aboard, and keep out of the water.
Balloon over Vang Vieng
Early flights lift off over the Nathong Valley between mid-September and May, at a reported USD 120 to 150 per adult. Balloon and paramotor flights were suspended in late February and March 2026, and a balloon struck power lines on 26 March 2026 without injuries. The Prime Minister ordered tighter rules on 7 April. Confirm that flights are running and ask about the safety rules before you commit.
A quieter alternative
Champasak, on the Mekong near the ruins of Vat Phou, suits couples who prefer calm. Stay in a riverside guesthouse and see the ruins in the soft light of the low season. Fly to Pakse and take the road from there.
What does not suit couples
- Tubing bar crawls on the Nam Song, with their free shots and methanol risk.
- Beach or reef holidays. Laos has no snorkelling, diving, jet-skiing or parasailing.
Timing
- Cool, dry weather from November to February is the best time.
- Smoke and heat cover the north in March and April.
- The rainy season, May to October, brings roaring waterfalls but riskier rivers.
