Laos Day Trip Ideas
Safety note as of October 2026: The UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to Xaisomboun Province, and the US State Department reports Level 2 for the country at the time of writing. Cluster bombs from the 1964 to 1973 war are still in the ground in the countryside, so use marked paths and never handle metal debris. Methanol in bar drinks has killed tourists, so stay with sealed bottles. Rivers and falls cause drownings. Route 7 towards Phonsavan is flagged by the US, so avoid driving it at night. A day trip in Laos works when it has one main stop and a short transfer. Four bases suit this style: Vientiane, Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang and Pakse. Money is the Lao kip (LAK), about 22,000 to 22,500 per dollar.
Vientiane bases
- Vang Vieng by rail. The fast train covers the trip in about 52 minutes. Second class costs about 171,000 LAK. You can fit the town, Tham Chang cave and a tubing or kayaking session into a long day. The Blue Lagoons are 11 to 16 km out, and transfers to the stations take extra time, so look up the final train home.
- Buddha Park. About 24 to 25 km southeast of the city. Bus 14 from Talat Sao bus station runs there, at a reported 6,000 to 10,000 LAK, but some services end at the bridge, so ask the driver. Entry is reported between 15,000 and 60,000 LAK. Closing time is 16:00 to 17:00. Luang Pu Bunleua Sulilat created the park in 1958.
Luang Prabang bases
- Kuang Si Falls. A 40 to 45 minute road trip. Morning visits miss the tour buses. The bear centre sits inside the grounds and the Butterfly Park is about 300 m before the gate. Foreigners pay 60,000 LAK now and 100,000 LAK from 15 November 2026. See the Kuang Si page .
- Pak Ou Caves. Take a boat upstream for about 1.5 hours and eat lunch at Ban Xang Hai or Pak Ou. The ticket is 30,000 LAK, rising to 60,000 LAK on 15 November 2026, and the boat is extra. See the Pak Ou page .
Pakse bases
- Vat Phou. Roughly 45 km away. Hire a guide or a motorbike, because there is no public transport to the gate. Day tours are about 450,000 to 500,000 LAK.
- Bolaven Plateau. Waterfalls (Tad Fane, Tad Yuang and Tad Champi) and coffee farms near Paksong. Each fall charges roughly 20,000 to 50,000 LAK. It takes a full day by motorbike, taxi or tour. Livestock anthrax has been reported around Pakse and the plateau, so avoid touching animals.
Too far for one day
- Si Phan Don. About 720 km from Vientiane, which means a flight to Pakse, 2.5 to 3 hours by road to Nakasang and then a boat.
- Plain of Jars. Fly to Xieng Khouang or face 7 to 11 hours on mountain roads.
- Kuang Si from Vientiane. Plan it from Luang Prabang instead.
