Day Trips From Tallinn: Half Day to Full Day
Day Trips From Tallinn by Time Needed
The right excursion depends on how many hours you can spare. Here are the options from shortest to longest, starting with those that finish before lunch.
Under half a day
The Estonian Open Air Museum at Rocca al Mare is inside the city. It is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 to 17, in its winter season from 29 September.
Jägala Waterfall is about 25 km east of Tallinn. It is around 8 m high and 50 m wide, free, and a roadside stop outside Lahemaa National Park, which makes it a good first stop on a drive east.
A full day east: Lahemaa
Estonia’s oldest national park is about an hour from the capital. Its RMK centre is 52 km out, and the main walk is the Viru Bog trail, 3.5 km with a 1.4 km boardwalk to a tower that suits strollers and wheelchairs. The Baltic German manors at Palmse and Sagadi finish the day. Park details are on rmk.ee . If you would rather not drive, Lahemaa tours on GetYourGuide cover the circuit by minibus.
A full day across the sea: Helsinki
Ferries take about 2 hours each way. Tallink’s MyStar is fastest, Eckerö Line’s Finlandia takes about 2 hours 15 and Viking Line’s XPRS about 2.5 hours. Compare sailings on Tallink or the other operators. Senate Square, the Rock Church and Suomenlinna fortress are the usual stops.
A long day to the coast: Pärnu
Coaches take about 1.5 to 2 hours to Pärnu, Estonia’s summer resort, which offers sandy beaches and spa treatments. It is best in summer.
Rummu quarry
The flooded quarry at Vasalemma, west of Tallinn, is run as a paid private beach with prison-history exhibits. Swimming is at your own risk, there are no lifeguards, and hidden concrete and rebar lie underwater. Do not jump from the ruins. Check the entry fee at rummu.ee .
Narva
Narva, on the Estonian side of the river, has a castle and a riverside walk. The border crossing next to it is for foot traffic only and runs reduced hours, and crossing into Russia is not a sightseeing option.
Verdict
Lahemaa is the best full-day escape, and Helsinki the best change of scene. Pair a trip with the 4-day Tallinn itinerary .
Tip: pick the trip by return transport. Check the last ferry or coach before you commit to the day.
