At the time of writing the US State Department lists Egypt at Level 2 (“Exercise Increased Caution”), with “Do Not Travel” limited to the Sinai interior and the remote Western Desert, not the places in this guide. Using Cairo as your budget base for Egypt

That means Saqqara, Alexandria, and Fayoum as real day trips, and Luxor, Aswan, and a Nile cruise as a fly-onward add-on, never a day trip. The 3 real day trips from Cairo
- Saqqara, Memphis, and Dahshur (“the other pyramids”). About an hour each way, and a clean full day: the Step Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara, the colossal Ramses II statue at Memphis, and the Bent and Red Pyramids at Dahshur, all with a fraction of the Giza crowds.
- Alexandria. Roughly 2 to 3 hours each way by train from Ramses Station, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the Citadel of Qaitbay, the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa, and the Corniche. It’s a long day trip; an overnight is more comfortable if you can spare it.
- Fayoum and Wadi El Hitan. About 2 hours via the Western Desert road, Wadi El Rayan, and Tunis Village, ending at the UNESCO-listed “Valley of the Whales” fossil site. This is a mainstream, operator-run route close to Cairo, distinct from the remote Western Desert areas the advisory above actually covers, book with an established operator.
Onward from Cairo: Luxor, Aswan, and a Nile cruise
Luxor (about a 1-hour-10-minute flight, Karnak and the Valley of the Kings), Aswan (about 1 hour 30 minutes), and Abu Simbel from Aswan are a fly-onward region, not a Cairo day trip. A 3 to 4 night Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan, taking in Kom Ombo and Edfu, is the classic way to link them. The Watania sleeper train (Cairo to Luxor to Aswan, overnight) is a cheaper alternative to flying if you have the time. Treat this as a genuine 3-4+ day add-on to your Cairo trip, and check the current advisory again before booking that leg specifically.
Booking flights, trains, and tours cheaply
Domestic flights to Luxor and Aswan are worth comparing well ahead of time, prices move with demand. The Watania sleeper train is bookable online and is the budget alternative to flying. For the three day trips, a shared small-group tour is usually cheaper per person than a private driver, though a private driver makes sense for Saqqara/Memphis/Dahshur if you’re short on time. Uber and Careem both work well for getting to and from Cairo’s train stations and to tour meeting points.
Where to stay in Cairo as your Egypt base
Zamalek and Downtown/Tahrir both work well as a base if you’re coming and going on day trips, close to transport and easy to return to in the evening. No, not sensibly. Luxor is about a 1-hour-10-minute flight and Aswan about 1 hour 30 minutes each way, so a same-day round trip leaves almost no time on the ground; treat both as a fly-onward extension of at least 3-4 days, or take the overnight Watania train instead. Saqqara, Memphis, Dahshur, Alexandria, and Fayoum genuinely work as day trips from Cairo.
