Family Activities in Bucharest by Age and Budget
Family Activities in Bucharest by Age and Budget
Families sort Bucharest by height and patience, not by neighbourhood. A toddler needs a pushchair path and a playground, a seven-year-old wants slides and skeletons, and a teenager wants something to photograph. The sections below follow that order, with prices in lei (RON) at roughly 5.3 to the euro.
Under five
Parks and gentle outings suit this age. King Michael I Park, by Lake Herăstrău, has shaded playgrounds, skate areas and an electric ferry across the water. Next door is the Village Museum, where children under seven enter free, and adults pay 40 lei. Half-price days are Monday and Tuesday. Hours and fees are on muzeul-satului.ro .
At Therme București, children under three are free. The Galaxy zone is the family zone, and the rest of the complex is adult-oriented.
Five to ten
This is the sweet spot. Therme’s Galaxy zone has about 1.7 kilometres of slides and a wave pool. Children aged 3 to 14 pay 55 to 65 lei for three hours, 85 to 95 for four and a half, and 125 to 135 for the full day, depending on weekday or weekend. Adults are 71 to 81 lei for three hours. See therme.ro . It sits in Balotești, 30 to 40 minutes north of the centre, and STB bus 442 serves it.
The Antipa Natural History Museum, on Kiseleff, is the rainy-day option, with a 4.5-metre fossil Deinotherium and large wildlife dioramas. Adults pay 32 lei, pensioners 16, pupils and students 8. Tickets are on antipa.ro .
Zoo Băneasa suits the same age group. Expect about 20 lei for adults and 10 for children, with tigers, lynx, wolves, bears, lemurs, pumas and reptiles. It is modest, and two hours is enough.
The Libearty bear sanctuary at Zărnești is a long day out from the capital, since it lies near Brașov. Visits are guided and run Tuesday to Sunday, with adults at 95 lei on weekdays and 100 at weekends, children aged 5 to 18 at 50 to 55, and under-fives not admitted. Tickets sell online at millionsoffriends.org .
Ten and over
Older children enjoy the Văcărești Nature Park, a wetland of about 183 hectares with more than 100 bird species, in a basin that was never finished as a reservoir. It is free, and you can walk there from Piața Sudului metro station. Check parcnaturalvacaresti.ro for current hours and bring binoculars.
Getting around with children
A metro single is 7 lei, and a 24-hour pass is 18 lei. A bus or tram ticket is about 3 lei for 90 minutes. The airport has no metro link, so use the train to Gara de Nord or Express Bus 100.
Verdict
Pick Therme for confident swimmers and Antipa for everyone else. If you need a driver for the castles, compare family-friendly tours first. More ideas are on the sightseeing page , and the four-day plan fits children well. Tip: do Therme midweek, when the price is lowest.
