Family Days Out in Salzburg
Family days out in Salzburg
Families do well in Salzburg because attractions are close together and many offer children’s rates. This page groups the best options by weather and gives 2026 prices. Where a figure comes from a reseller or listing site, it is shown as “about”, so check the venue.
For a dry day
Hellbrunn Palace and trick fountains. The summer palace of Archbishop Markus Sittikus was finished in 1615 and is full of hidden water jets. Seats, tables and walkways soak unsuspecting guests on the guided tour. There is also a mechanical theatre with 163 moving figures and organ music. Open daily from 28 March to 1 November 2026, at about EUR 16.50 for adults and EUR 6.50 for ages 4 to 18, with a family ticket of about EUR 36.50. Bus 25 goes there. The park is free, and so is a look at the glass gazebo from the film.
Salzburg Zoo. The only zoo in the area is Tiergarten Hellbrunn, at the south end of the same park. Animals live below a cliff face: white rhinos, cheetahs, brown bears, ibex, jaguars and tapirs, about 1,500 in all. Expect about EUR 17 for adults, EUR 7 for children 4 to 14 and EUR 39.50 for families.
Mönchsberg lift. A 30 second ride up the cliff at EUR 3.40 single or EUR 4.80 return, with paths and views at the top.
For a wet day
Haus der Natur. Located at Museumsplatz 5, it has an aquarium of 42 tanks with sharks and coral, more than 200 reptiles and amphibians, dinosaur models, a space section and a Science Center with water turbines and sound experiments. Tickets are EUR 16 for adults, EUR 10.50 for ages 4 to 15 and EUR 48 for a family of four.
Marionette Theatre. On Schwarzstraße, with UNESCO intangible heritage status. Puppeteers work wooden marionettes to recorded music, in shortened shows made for younger audiences. The 2026 schedule suggests adult seats from about EUR 28 to 43 and children under 12 near EUR 15.
Underground
Salzwelten at Hallein suits older children. Visitors put on miners’ overalls, slide down wooden chutes, ride a mine train and cross a brine lake on a raft. Adults pay EUR 35 and children 4 to 15 pay EUR 16. Children under 4 are not allowed in, which is a safety rule.
Saving money
The Salzburg Card is EUR 38 for adults and EUR 19 for children aged 6 to 15 for 24 hours in high season, and EUR 35 and EUR 17.50 in low season. It includes the fountains, the zoo, Haus der Natur and the lift, but a family should add up the family tickets above before buying it.
Practical tips
- Bring spare clothes to Hellbrunn.
- Pack snacks; the palace park is large.
- The Salzach is a regulated city river and not a place to swim, so keep children on the footpaths beside it.
