Family-Friendly Dhaka: Museums, Gardens, Safety
Travel advisory, checked October 2026. The UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to the Chittagong Hill Tracts (Rangamati, Khagrachari, Bandarban), and the United States warns against going there. UK advice says terrorist attacks are very likely and that hartals and demonstrations can turn violent quickly, so keep children away from crowds and rallies. Bag snatching from motorbikes and CNG autos has risen since 2024. Please read the UK FCDO page and the US advisory before booking.
Dhaka with children
Dhaka offers little purpose-built entertainment for families. Playgrounds are scarce, pavements are poor, traffic is heavy, and winter smog is severe. A short, planned day with a car and driver suits children best. This page lists the stops that work and a few places to leave off the list.
Military Museum
The Bangabandhu Military Museum near Bijoy Sarani Metro station is the strongest family stop. Visitors see army, navy and air force galleries and vintage vehicles, and the official site mentions a laser show, a children’s arena and a restaurant. A foreign adult ticket is 800 BDT (SAARC 500, Bangladeshi 150), and the child price should be confirmed on arrival. It is closed on Wednesday, open Sunday to Thursday and Saturday 10:30 to 19:00, and Friday from 15:00 to 19:00.
Garden and zoo at Mirpur
The National Botanical Garden and the national zoo are in Mirpur, in northern Dhaka. Entry prices were not confirmed in 2026, so ask at the gate. Metro stations at Mirpur 10 and 11 are a short ride from the gates, not beside them. Keep to the cooler morning hours and do not expect polished enclosures.
Craft grounds at Sonargaon
About 30 km southeast, the Folk Art and Craft Museum in the Boro Sardar Bari has wide open grounds and craft displays. Allow one and a half to three hours each way. The museum closes on Thursday and nearby Panam Nagar on Sunday. Open space makes this easier with young children than the city centre.
Hatirjheel walkway
Hatirjheel is a reclaimed lake with a pedestrian promenade and lit bridges. Visit by day for a short walk. The lake’s water taxi has run a reduced timetable because of fuel limits, and the water is not for touching.
Places to leave off the list
The Sadarghat river terminal is crowded, polluted and risky for small children. Memorials and the Liberation War Museum show the graphic history of 1971 and are not child outings.
Child health and transport
Offer only sealed bottled water. Avoid unpeeled fruit, raw salad and street drinks. Between November and February the air is often among the worst in the world, so children with asthma may do better to visit in another month. The monsoon peak for dengue calls for repellent and sleeves in daytime. Neither CNG autos nor rickshaws have child seats or belts, so use a hired car.
Booking a driver
A private car with a driver gives you control over pace and stops. Look at options on Viator .
