Surabaya’s best photos cost nothing
Surabaya isn’t a conventionally scenic city, it’s a working port, but its history and its volcano day trips both photograph well, and almost every spot below is free. This list runs the free in-city shots first, then the one paid add-on that’s worth the early wake-up.

The Heroes Monument and Jalan Tunjungan
Tugu Pahlawan, the 41m pillar commemorating the Battle of Surabaya, photographs well in the late-afternoon light, and the grounds around it are free. A short walk down Jalan Tunjungan, the city’s grand Dutch-era street, passes Hotel Majapahit’s Art Deco facade, the building where Indonesian youths tore the blue stripe from the Dutch flag in 1945; both cost nothing to photograph from the street.
The Arab Quarter’s lanes
The market lanes around the Sunan Ampel Mosque are Surabaya’s most atmospheric photo subject: narrow streets, spice and prayer-item stalls, and a genuine pilgrimage-neighbourhood feel. Photograph respectfully, this is a working religious site, not a backdrop, and dress modestly since you’ll likely be asked to before entering the mosque itself.
The 5.4km Suramadu Bridge
The Suramadu Bridge, Indonesia’s longest at 5.4km, is a striking sunset subject from the Surabaya side, especially with the Madura Strait beneath it. It’s free to cross and to photograph, tolls having been abolished in 2018.
Mount Bromo’s sunrise: the one paid shot worth the money
If you’re adding a Bromo day trip, the sunrise over the Sea of Sand from the Penanjakan viewpoint is the single most striking image available within reach of Surabaya, smoking crater, caldera floor, and the Tenggerese landscape all in one frame. It costs real money and a very early wake-up, roughly 3-4 hours each way plus the pre-dawn jeep ride, but it’s the shot most people actually remember. Book a Bromo sunrise tour ahead in dry season, when clear skies matter most for the shot.
A few practical notes
Golden hour (early morning and late afternoon) works better than midday almost everywhere in this list, partly for light and partly because Surabaya’s heat is genuinely rough by noon. Ask before photographing people directly, standard courtesy anywhere, and be extra considerate around the Sunan Ampel Mosque during Friday prayers.
