Gansbaai Attraction Tours: Marine Big 5, Grootbos
The Main Tours at a Glance
Gansbaai’s organised attractions fall into three groups: wildlife boats, shark cage diving and the Grootbos botanical tours. Book each one directly with the operator, and read the rate tiers carefully, because most prices differ for international visitors and South African citizens.
Marine Big 5, Marine Dynamics Shark and Whale Tours
- Departs from: Kleinbaai. The brand was formerly Dyer Island Cruises, and its site is whalewatchsa.com.
- What you see: seals, penguins, dolphins and whales in season.
- Length: about 2 to 2.5 hours, running all year.
- Prices: adult R2,340, child under 12 R1,725, under 5 free, plus a R150 conservation fee. South African citizen fares are R1,728 (adult) and R864 (child).
- Whale months: southern right whales roughly June to December, humpback and Bryde’s whales roughly January to May.
Whale Watching With Ivanhoe Sea Safaris
- Departs from: Gansbaai Harbour, as the permit holder for Area 6 of Walker Bay.
- Length: about 2 hours.
- Departures: 07:00, 10:00, 13:00 and 15:30, June to December.
- Prices: from about R1,950 for an adult and R975 for a child under 12. The operator’s page shows 2025 figures, so confirm before you book. A whale and shark combination is listed at R4,200 for an adult.
Dyer Island and Geyser Rock From the Water
Both are provincial nature reserves and a Ramsar site about 8 km out. Landing is not allowed, and there is no hiking, kayaking or snorkelling. You see them from a licensed boat, where Geyser Rock shows its seal colony of tens of thousands. Shark Alley is the channel between the two islands, and nobody should swim or paddle there independently.
Shark Cage Diving
Marine Dynamics runs a surface cage dive from 5 Geelbek Street, Kleinbaai, with breath-hold diving and no scuba licence needed. International adults pay R3,655 and South African adults R2,268, plus the R150 fee. Great whites have been rare since about 2017, and operators cannot promise one. Bronze whalers and sevengills are the common sharks. White Shark Projects at 16 Geelbek Street is a separate business.
Grootbos Garden and Gallery Tours
Grootbos Private Nature Reserve sits on the R43 between Stanford and Gansbaai. All tours need advance booking, take groups of up to 10 and require guests to be 12 or older.
- Florilegium Half Day Tour: R1,250 per person for South African residents, R1,950 for international guests. About 4.5 hours, 09:30 to 14:00, Wednesday to Sunday. It has a 4x4 botanical safari, a guided stop at the Hannarie Wenhold Botanical Art Gallery and a light high tea. Getting to the reserve is up to you.
- Botanical Art Gallery Tour: R300 per person, two hours, 10:00 to 12:00 on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Indoors, and the only way into the gallery.
