Old Melbourne Gaol
Ned Kelly’s execution took place in this bluestone building in 1880, and the site now runs as a museum. It opens daily from 10am to 5pm and shuts on Christmas Day and Good Friday. Entry is AUD 38 for adults, AUD 30 for concessions and under-30s, and AUD 22 for ages 5 to 15, and a two-adult, two-child family ticket is AUD 90. Add-ons include the Ned Kelly’s Last Stand guided tour on weekends for AUD 7 extra, the City Watch House role-play and select-night ghost and hangman tours with separate tickets. See the Old Melbourne Gaol site .
Royal Exhibition Building Dome Promenade
Museums Victoria offers a guided climb onto the dome’s walkway. Book ahead, and expect adult prices from around AUD 29 on a March 2026 listing that included Melbourne Museum entry. The top level involves roughly 20 steps, though three lower levels have lift access. The building and Carlton Gardens joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004.
Town Hall and Shrine
- Melbourne Town Hall: free tours organised by the City of Melbourne, booked online, with the organ and council rooms on the route.
- Shrine of Remembrance: a free war memorial that welcomes quiet, respectful visitors. Open 10am to 5pm daily, last entry 4:30pm. Hourly tours leave from 10am to 4pm, skipping 1pm. See the Shrine’s visit page .
Cooks’ Cottage
Cooks’ Cottage sits in Fitzroy Gardens. Confirm its hours and any entry fee before heading there.
What to carry
Bring photo ID for concession fares, a contactless card, since most counters are cashless, and a layer for air-conditioned rooms.
Choosing between them
Pick the MCG for sport, the Gaol for colonial history, the dome for architecture and the free tours for a quiet hour. Most can be reached by tram, and trams inside the CBD are free.
