Melbourne Walks: Arcades, Gardens and Southbank
Central Melbourne sits on a flat grid, and its best corners are small lanes between the main streets. Here are routes to follow on foot.
Laneway and arcade loop
- Begin under the clocks at Flinders Street Station.
- Walk up Degraves Street and through Centre Place for the coffee lanes.
- Pass through Block Arcade (1892) and Royal Arcade (1870).
- Detour to Hosier Lane and AC/DC Lane to see the street art, which is repainted often.
Give it two hours. Cafe stops stretch it quickly.
River promenade
Cross Princes Bridge and follow the Southbank promenade east, then return along the opposite bank past Birrarung Marr. It is a level route with water on one side and the city skyline on the other.
Aboriginal Heritage Walk
The Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria hosts a walk led by Aboriginal guides, lasting about 90 minutes. It covers plants used for food, tools and medicine and includes a smoking ceremony. Tickets are AUD 45 for adults, AUD 35 for concessions and AUD 22.50 for ages 12 to 17. It starts at the Visitor Centre on Birdwood Avenue, typically at 11am, and runs on set days, so book ahead through the Gardens’ event page .
Gardens to the Shrine
From the Botanic Gardens, a gentle climb leads to the Shrine of Remembrance in the Kings Domain. The Shrine honours those who served in war, so lower your voice inside. It is free and open 10am to 5pm each day, with the last entry at 4:30pm. Details are on the Shrine’s visit page .
Free civic tour
The City of Melbourne offers a free guided walk-through of the Town Hall. Reserve in advance, because days and times vary.
Fitzroy
Brunswick Street and Gertrude Street are good for window-shopping, vintage racks and murals. There is nothing to book.
A half-day plan
Start with the laneways, break for coffee in Degraves Street, cross the river for the Southbank promenade, then continue to the Botanic Gardens and the Shrine. Keep the pace easy, and trams inside the CBD bring you back at no cost.
Trams and tickets
Hop on a tram anywhere in the Free Tram Zone for nothing. Outside it, tap a contactless card or phone if you pay a full fare, and carry a myki if you hold a concession.
Comfort
Carry a rain shell, since showers arrive without warning. Sun cream matters from December to February.
