Hafengeburtstag turns the harbor into an open-air festival for three days: ships open for boarding, tugboat displays on the water, fireworks, and free entry to most of it. It’s billed as the world’s largest port festival, and it draws crowds accordingly, so book accommodation early if a May trip lines up with it.
Hamburger DOM runs three separate times a year rather than once, a traditional fairground with rides and games that’s genuinely free to walk through even if you don’t spend a euro on a single ride. Each run lasts roughly a month, so there’s a good chance one overlaps whenever you visit between March and December.
Reeperbahn Festival takes over St. Pauli’s venues for four days every September, international acts across genres playing clubs and theaters throughout the district. It’s the one date on this list that needs a ticket bought ahead rather than showing up, and accommodation in St. Pauli gets tight that week.
Christmas markets cluster around Rathausmarkt from late November through December 23, free to wander, with a few euros covering a cup of Glühwein if you want to warm up between stalls.
