Helsinki Adventure Tours: Guided or DIY, With Costs
Helsinki Adventure Tours: Guided or DIY, With Costs
Several of Helsinki’s adventure tours can be done for the price of a public transport ticket. Others, mainly boats and Lapland trips, are worth paying a guide for. This page puts each trip side by side, the do-it-yourself cost against what a tour adds, so you can spend where it counts. Prices are in euros.
Nuuksio National Park: DIY wins
On your own: commuter train (lines E, L, U or Y) from Helsinki Central Station to Espoo Centre, about 25 minutes, then bus 245 or 245A, about 25 to 30 minutes to the Haukkalampi stop, and a walk of roughly 1.5 km to the lake. Ticket zones at the park end are not straightforward, so price the journey in the HSL journey planner. The park itself is free, and so are its marked loops of 2 km and 4 km.
With a guide: a tour saves you the connections and the planning. Worth it if you have only one day and no appetite for timetables. Compare guided Nuuksio days on Viator .

Suomenlinna: DIY wins easily
On your own: the HSL public ferry from Market Square, about 15 minutes, on an ordinary AB ticket at €3.30 in the app or €3.50 contactless. The fortress islands are free to walk, tunnels included; bring a phone torch.
With a guide: a walking guide adds the story of the six islands and the 18th-century Swedish builders. Pay for the guide, not for a boat, since the public ferry already goes there. Timetables and museum hours are on suomenlinna.fi .
A sauna boat: guided only
There is no DIY version of a chartered archipelago boat with a wood-fired sauna on board. Prices depend on the size of the boat and the length of the hire, and splitting it within a group brings the cost per head down a long way. Search sauna boat charters on GetYourGuide , and confirm the route and how many people it takes before paying. Lower yourself into the sea slowly by the ladder, and skip the dip if you have a heart condition.
Tallinn by sea: DIY wins
On your own: three ferry lines cross in about 2 hours to 2 hours 30 minutes: Tallink and Eckerö Line from West Terminal 2, Viking Line from the Katajanokka terminal. Tallink advertises one-way fares from about €28.80, and its AUTUMN code takes up to 50% off until 22 December 2026. Fares shift with the day and hour, so compare tallink.com with vikingline.com for your date.
With a guide: helpful only if you want someone to lead you round the Old Town. The crossing is the same boat either way.
Lapland: book the activities, not the transport
Huskies, snowmobiles and aurora watching are Lapland activities, not Helsinki ones. The VR night train to Rovaniemi has sleeper compartments from about €49, priced per compartment rather than per person, so two people sharing halve the cost. Book the husky or snowmobile trips with operators in Rovaniemi once your train is fixed.
Budget notes
Buy tickets in the HSL app rather than tapping a card. If you buy a Helsinki Card, skip the Digital tier for transport, because it has none; the City and Region tiers include rides. Pack your own food from a supermarket for Nuuksio, and fill bottles from the tap, since Helsinki’s water is excellent.
Verdict: spend your tour money on the sauna boat or Lapland, and do Nuuksio, Suomenlinna and Tallinn yourself.

Tip: in winter the Nuuksio bus stops at Nuuksionpää instead of running on to Kattila, so check your trailhead and return time in the HSL planner before you leave.
