How Many Days in Mecca: Umrah Plans for 3 to 7
Travel advisory: The US advises reconsidering travel to Saudi Arabia because of regional conflict, and Houthi missiles and drones have targeted Saudi cities. UK restrictions are limited to the Yemen border area and Abha and Khamis Mushait, so Mecca, Medina, Jeddah and Taif are not affected by them. Check the US State Department and UK FCDO before you commit.
Umrah itself takes only a few hours, so the number of days you plan is really a choice about how much prayer, rest and travel to add.
The Haram area is open only to Muslims under Saudi law, with ID or visa checks at road checkpoints. These plans are for Muslim pilgrims. Everyone can use the Jeddah and Taif legs.
Three days: Umrah only
Arrive in Jeddah, take the train to Makkah station in about 30 to 45 minutes and rest. Perform Umrah on your timed slot on day two, and use day three for prayer and the journey home. The Mecca 3-day plan lays out the hours.
Seven days: Mecca and Medina
Spend about four days in Mecca, one for the train and two in Medina. The high-speed train covers the distance in about 2 hours, with economy fares from roughly 150 SAR and business about three times higher. Book through sar.hhr.sa . In Medina, the Rawdah needs its own Nusuk permit, valid for one visit per 365 days. Mount Uhud, Masjid Quba and the Seven Mosques fill the remaining days. For a longer split, the 6-day plan adds rest.
10 days: adding Jeddah
Split the time 5 days in Mecca, 3 in Medina and 2 in Jeddah. Jeddah’s Al-Balad and its Corniche are open to everyone and make a gentler end to a long trip.
What to arrange first
- Pick dates. The 2027 Hajj is expected to begin about 14 May, with Arafah on Saturday 15 May and Eid on 16 May, if the moon sighting agrees.
- Choose the right visa. An Umrah visa and a tourist eVisa are different, and the eVisa never covers Hajj.
- Book timed permits on Nusuk .
- Carry a meningitis vaccination certificate.
- Women of any age may travel without a mahram since October 2022 with an approved group.
Where to sleep
Hotels near the Grand Mosque fill early. You can search Madinah hotels on Booking.com for the second half of the trip, and compare walking distances to the Prophet’s Mosque.
Heat and pace
Summer temperatures pass 45C, and Hajj 2024 saw at least 1,301 heat deaths above 50C. Build in rest hours and avoid outdoor walking between about 11:00 and 16:30.
If you only have a short window, the day trips guide shows what fits in a day. Book the Medina train as soon as your dates are set.
