Kenya Multi-Day Safari Circuits and Rail Routes
Three days in the Mara in August cost US$600 per adult in park fees before the lodge, the driver or the vehicle is paid for. Multi-day trips in Kenya are best planned from the entry fees outward, so here is the arithmetic and the logistics for each circuit.
The Mara: fee by fee
Narok County charges non-resident adults US$100 per day from January to June and US$200 per day from July to December. Ages 9 to 17 pay US$50 and younger children are free. A ticket is valid for about 12 hours, roughly 6am to 6pm, so each calendar day needs its own ticket. Mara gates mostly take cash. Conservancies outside the reserve charge their own daily fees.
The road from Nairobi is 225 to 260 km, with 5 to 6 hours each way and a rough final 65 km past Narok. A flight from Wilson Airport to an airstrip takes about 45 minutes, and lodges send a vehicle to meet you. Three nights lets you see two full days of game drives. Operators advertise three-day packages at about US$400 to US$750 per person, depending on the lodge standard, so compare inclusions line by line.
Wildebeest herds reach the Mara from late July, and Mara River crossings peak from mid-August to September, depending on rain. Treat a crossing as a bonus, never a promise.
The loop: Amboseli to Nakuru
Amboseli and Lake Nakuru both charge non-resident adults US$90 per day, with children at US$45. Plan 2 nights at each, with a full day of driving between them. Amboseli is best at dawn for elephants beneath Kilimanjaro, and Nakuru for flamingos and white rhinos. Prepay at kwspay.ecitizen.go.ke , because paying at the gate is discouraged.
Mount Kenya: Point Lenana
The 5-day trek to Point Lenana, 4,985 m, passes bamboo forest and high moorland before a pre-dawn scramble on rocky ground. Licensed guides are required. Packages are typically US$650 to US$1,100 per person including park fees, porters and huts; park information is on kws.go.ke . Allow time to acclimatise, because altitude sickness catches fit hikers as often as anyone.
By rail to the coast
The Madaraka Express leaves Nairobi at 08:00, 15:00 and 22:00. The 08:00 service arrives at about 14:00 and the 15:00 reaches Mombasa around 20:30. Fares: KES 1,500 economy, KES 4,500 first class, KES 12,000 premium. Book at metickets.krc.co.ke . Then continue to Diani, or add Fort Jesus in Mombasa for US$17.
Logistics checklist
- eTA: apply at etakenya.go.ke before departure, about US$30. Most African and Caribbean passports are exempt.
- Safety: check your government’s current advice, and do not travel to the northern and Somali-border counties.
- Plastic: carrier bags are banned, and single-use plastic is banned in parks and on beaches.
- Cash: bring US dollars and shillings for Mara gates, tips and park donations.
A 7 to 10 day loop might run Nairobi, Mara, Nairobi and then the coast. For a shorter version, the 3 day plan covers the capital and a park. To compare packages, see Mara safari tours on GetYourGuide , and for accommodation search Amboseli lodges on Booking.com . Read the day trips page for outings that fit between longer legs.
Verdict: spend your money on three Mara nights in late summer, then take the train rather than a flight to the coast.
