Tanzania Day Trips: Which Parks Fit a Single Day
Travel advisory: The United States asks travellers to reconsider travel to Tanzania, and the United Kingdom advises against all but essential travel within 20 km of the Mozambique border at Cabo Delgado. Day-trip bases such as Arusha, Moshi and Stone Town are outside that border strip. Confirm current wording at the US State Department and the UK FCDO before booking.
Which Tanzanian parks fit into one day depends on where you sleep. From Arusha or Moshi the answer is three parks and a hot spring; from Stone Town it is two islands’ worth of sights.
Not a day trip: the Serengeti
Seronera, the hub of the central Serengeti, is about 8 to 9 hours from Arusha by road, with gravel after Ngorongoro. Save the Serengeti for a stay of several nights.
From Arusha: three parks
| Park | Drive from Arusha | Draw |
|---|---|---|
| Tarangire | about 2 hours south-west | baobabs and large elephant herds along the river |
| Lake Manyara | about 2 hours west | groundwater forest, flamingos, tree-climbing lions |
| Arusha National Park | closest to town | Momella lakes, giraffe, colobus, a walking option |
Entry for each is USD 59 per adult per 24 hours at peak, lower out of season, with reduced child rates and free entry under 5. Fees are charged in US dollars and gates accept cards or e-payment only. See the Tanzania National Parks site for the tariff.
Canoe safaris on Small Momella Lake cost roughly USD 60 to 90 per person, and offer hippo views with Mount Meru above.
From Moshi or Arusha: hot springs and coffee
Chemka springs lie about 1 hour 15 minutes from either town, with clear, warm turquoise pools under fig trees. Materuni, in the Kilimanjaro foothills, combines a rainforest hike to an 80 m waterfall with a Chagga coffee workshop at roughly USD 40 to 65 per person. Climbing Kilimanjaro itself takes many days with a registered operator and guide.
From Stone Town: sea and forest
Changuu (Prison) Island is a short dhow crossing from Stone Town, with Aldabra tortoises and clear water at the nearby Bawe sandbank. Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, about 45 minutes south-east, protects red colobus monkeys and a mangrove boardwalk. Cover shoulders and knees in towns and villages.
Day-trip checklist
- A card for gate fees, because gates take no cash.
- Water, sun protection and malaria precautions for areas below about 1,800 m.
- No plastic carrier bags: they are banned, though a zip-lock toiletry bag is fine.
- An early start, since drives take up much of the day.
Look through options on GetYourGuide . If you have more time, the 3-day itinerary links parks together.
Verdict: Tarangire gives the best single-day wildlife return, and Chemka is the best way to end a day.
