Multi-Day Trips From Munich: Three Routes
Three routes cover the best of Bavaria beyond Munich, and each one works with a train pass and a single overnight stay. Here is how to choose between them.
Route one: fairytale castles via Füssen
Take the regional train from Hauptbahnhof to Füssen, about 2 hours 10 and 125 km. Bus 78 connects to Hohenschwangau village. Neuschwanstein opens only by timed guided tour, at €21 (€20 reduced) plus a €2.50 booking fee, through hohenschwangau.de . In summer the middle-of-the-day slots sell out weeks ahead. The Schwangau through-road is closed until about mid-December 2026, so approach via Hohenschwangau and allow more time. The Marienbrücke viewpoint is free, but it closes in ice and snow, and the daily status is posted on the same site. An overnight stay lets you take the first tour slot of the day. Check Füssen rates on Booking.com for the town.
Route two: the Zugspitze and Garmisch
Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a direct train away, about 1 hour 30. Stay a night, ride up the Zugspitze (€78 adult round trip on the summer tariff until 22 November 2026), and walk the Partnachklamm gorge. The cogwheel train and cable cars make the ascent easy, and tariffs are posted on zugspitze.de . In winter, a different tariff applies from late November.
Route three: Salzburg and Berchtesgaden
Salzburg is about 140 km and 1 hour 30 by Railjet (standard fare, see bahn.de ). It suits a night with an evening stroll through the old town. For Berchtesgaden, the Kehlstein bus runs until about 8 November 2026, weather permitting, at €31 for adults and €16 for children from 6 to 14. Confirm dates with berchtesgaden.de .
Adding Starnberger See
The lake’s passenger ships run a thinner schedule in October. Until 18 October, one ship sails twice a day and another at weekends, and the timetable is on seenschifffahrt.de . It adds a gentle half-day between the mountain legs.
Putting a loop together
A comfortable plan for four nights is Munich, then Füssen, Garmisch and back, with a Munich buffer night. Staying in Munich between trips means one hotel and short travel days. A pass matters: the Deutschlandticket costs €63 a month and covers local and regional transport, but not long-distance services, so confirm any route on bahn.de .
In Munich itself, the three-day itinerary fills the spare day, and the day trips guide covers the single-day versions of these routes.
Tip: lock in the Neuschwanstein tour time first, then book the Füssen room, because the castle slot is the only part of this plan that can sell out.
