Romantic Munich: A Weekend for Two
Friday night in a lantern-lit beer garden, Saturday on a palace canal, Sunday with the shops shut and nowhere to be. A Munich weekend for two follows its own gentle rhythm, and it is easy to plan.
Friday evening: a garden and a Maß
Start with a self-service beer garden under the chestnut trees. A Maß of Augustiner Helles is about €8.50, and you can bring your own cheese, bread and radishes so long as the drinks come from the counter. Many drink stalls prefer cash. If you want a sit-down dinner, a traditional Augustiner restaurant serves pork knuckle for €18 to €28 per person.
Saturday morning: Viktualienmarkt and the Hofgarten
Buy fruit and cheese at Viktualienmarkt, with about 140 stalls. Then walk to the Hofgarten, where lime trees surround the Diana Temple and street violinists play. Shops are open on Saturday, so this is the day for browsing.
Saturday afternoon: Nymphenburg
Take public transport to Nymphenburg Palace. The park is free and spans 200 hectares of baroque gardens, and a Venetian gondola glides on the canal daily until the end of October, weather permitting. Details are at munich.travel . The palace combination ticket costs €20 (€18 reduced) until 15 October, then €16 (€14 reduced) from 16 October. Book a table somewhere nearby afterwards.
Saturday evening: a special dinner
For a splurge, the city has Michelin-starred tables at Tantris, Atelier and Tohru in der Schreiberei, with tasting menus from about €140 to €250 per person. Reserve well ahead. If you are thinking about the Bavarian State Opera, its main festival runs in June and July, so check the programme for any other dates on the official Munich site .
Sunday: park and lake
Retail shops close on Sunday, which suits a slow day. Walk the Englischer Garten and watch the Eisbach wave from the bank. Only experienced surfers use it, wearing a self-releasing leash and never after 22:00, so it is a view rather than something to try together. Or head for Starnberger See. October ship times are reduced: one ship sails twice daily until 18 October, and another sails at weekends. Look at seenschifffahrt.de before you travel.
Extending to Füssen
If you have another night, Füssen puts you close to Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. The castle is by timed guided tour only (€21, €20 reduced, plus a €2.50 online fee) at hohenschwangau.de . The Schwangau through-road is closed until about mid-December 2026. You can compare Füssen hotels on Booking.com .
Winter couples can look forward to the Christmas markets from 20 November to 24 December 2026, including Marienplatz with its 25-metre tree.
For a day-by-day plan, see the two-day itinerary or the Munich activities overview .
Tip: put the Nymphenburg gondola on Saturday, since the season ends in October, and reserve the dinner table before anything else.
