Multi-Day Trips From Ljubljana: Pick Your Bases
Multi-Day Trips: Choosing Your Bases
The key decision for a longer stay is whether to sleep in one place and travel out, or move on every night or two. Slovenia’s size makes either work, and the right answer depends mostly on transport.
Base one: Ljubljana
Staying in the capital for three or four nights keeps luggage in one spot while you run day trips. Postojna is 46 km away, Bled 55 km, Bohinj about 80 km and Piran about 120 km. The Ljubljana 3-day itinerary and the 4-day itinerary fill the city days between excursions. Buses reach Bled, but most other day trips are far simpler by car or on a guided tour.
Base two: Bled and Bohinj
Move to the Julian Alps for a night or two and you start the day inside the scenery rather than driving into it. Bled has a castle open 8:00 to 20:00 from April to October and shorter hours in winter, a pletna boat to the island at €20 per adult return and a lakeshore path. Vintgar Gorge is nearby, with €10 gorge entry or the €15 all-in-one ticket, sold online only at tickets.vintgar.si between April and October. Bohinj is quieter, and its Vogel cable car has an adult return of about €32 to €35, but the main gondola is under maintenance until about 1 December 2026. Check Vogel before you plan around it.
Base three: caves and coast
The Postojna and Predjama area suits a stop on the way to the sea. The cave costs €34.90 at peak time, and Two Adventures is €49.90 to €58.90. See Postojna Cave Park for current options. Škocjan Caves, around 75 km from the capital, are a UNESCO site with guided tours. Piran follows, with Venetian Gothic streets and a seafront for dinner.
Timing
- April to October is the season for Vintgar.
- November to March shortens the castle hours at Bled.
- Kranjska Gora’s ski season starts in December.
Budget notes
Inside the capital, an adult Ljubljana Card costs €41, €49 or €54 for 24, 48 or 72 hours and includes unlimited LPP buses, castle entry and a river cruise, which suits a city base. A single bus ride is €1.50. On Fridays from March to October, the Odprta Kuhna food market on Pogačarjev trg offers a cheap, lively dinner at roughly €15 to €28 for a few dishes.
Cars
A rental car lets you stitch the bases together, and DiscoverCars is one place to compare. Collect it on departure day, because the old centre is closed to private cars.
Tip
Fix the sequence by distance: capital, caves, coast, then the Alps on the way back north. Keep one flexible day for weather, because the mountains change quickly and hikers should never go alone.
