Ljubljana Day Trips: Caves, Lakes and Coast
Day Trips From Ljubljana, Chosen by Weather
Slovenia offers a good plan for every forecast. Rain suits the caves, a clear sky suits the lakes, and a warm day suits the coast. Check the weather the night before and pick from the three groups below.
If it is wet: go underground
Postojna Cave is 46 km from the capital, about 45 minutes by road. An electric train enters the cave, and the temperature stays near 10°C in every season, so jackets are needed even in summer. Cave only is €34.90 at peak time. The Two Adventures combination adds Predjama Castle, built into a 123 m cliff, and costs €49.90 to €58.90. The Vivarium displays olms, the cave salamanders. See Postojna Cave Park for tickets.
Škocjan Caves are about 75 km away and are on the UNESCO list. Guided tours cross a huge river canyon at roughly 12°C, and the Škocjan Caves Park site lists current tour times.
If it is clear: head for the Alps
Lake Bled is 55 km north-west, 45 to 55 minutes by car or around 1 hour 15 minutes by bus. You can row to the island church in a pletna for €20 per adult, cash only, or climb to the castle. Castle entry is €19, and it opens from 8:00 to 20:00 between April and October and until 18:00 from November to March. Swim only in designated areas such as the lifeguarded Castle Bathing Area. Browse Bled day tours on GetYourGuide if you want transport arranged.
Vintgar Gorge is a short hop from Bled. The gorge ticket is €10 for adults and €5 for children, and the €15 all-in-one ticket adds the Vintgarjenje trail and Green Access for the car park and e-bus. It is open April to October, and tickets can be bought only online through Vintgar Gorge .
Lake Bohinj is about 80 km away and takes around 1 hour 20 minutes. It lies in Triglav National Park, with the Savica Waterfall on its walking routes. The Vogel cable car costs about €32 to €35 for an adult return depending on the season, yet the main gondola is under maintenance until about 1 December 2026. Autumn visits work best around the shoreline, and Vogel posts reopening news.
If it is warm: the coast
Piran lies about 120 km away, roughly 1 hour 20 minutes by road. Climb the town walls, relax on Tartini Square and order seafood from the Adriatic. It is a full day, so start early.
Getting there
Public transport reaches Bled by Arriva bus, but most other stops are simpler with a car or a guided tour.
Tip
Pair two stops that sit close together, such as Bled and Vintgar, rather than adding a third. See the Ljubljana sightseeing page for city days between trips.
