Uruguay Sightseeing Viewpoints: Peaks and Towers
Climb something
Uruguay is mostly low-lying, so its few high points pay off. Five viewpoints stand out, and each is reachable without special equipment. Plan them around weather, since a clear day makes every one better.
Cerro Pan de Azúcar
Near Piriápolis, this granite peak rises 423 metres and carries a 35-metre concrete cross at its top. The views take in the River Plate estuary. The ascent is closed temporarily during heat waves or fire risk, so check conditions on the day. At its base, the native fauna breeding station is free, with summer hours from 08:00 to 19:00.
Palacio Salvo, Montevideo
Completed in 1928, this tower overlooks Plaza Independencia and is a reference point in the city skyline. Guided visits go up to a viewpoint and the tango museum. English tours are listed for weekdays at 11:00 and 15:00, but confirm times and prices with palaciosalvooficial@gmail.com before you go.
Faro de Colonia
The lighthouse in Colonia del Sacramento rewards a spiral climb with views over the old quarter and the river. It charges a small entry fee. Colonia has been a UNESCO site since 1995. Reach it by Colonia Express (about 1 hour from Buenos Aires) or Buquebus and Seacat (about 1h15); see Colonia Express for sailings.
Cabo Polonio Lighthouse
Dating from 1881, the lighthouse stands above a sea lion colony. Getting there is part of the sightseeing: leave the car or coach at the Ruta 10 terminal (km 264.5) and take an open 4x4 truck over the dunes, UYU 470 round trip. The Rocha tourism page gives the departure times. The village runs without mains electricity, and the park bans tents and pets.
Casapueblo at sunset
Casapueblo at Punta Ballena costs UYU 600 for general entry. It is open daily until sunset, and the terraces face the Atlantic. Arrive 40 minutes before the sunset reading, the Ceremonia al Sol. You can look at the museum’s website for details, or compare Punta Ballena tours on Viator .
Planning notes
Most coastal sights are easier from December to February, though they are also the busiest. Card payments at restaurants get a 9-point VAT cut, from 22% to about 13%, until April 2027. Travel between sights by coach from Tres Cruces in Montevideo, and treat the Cabo Polonio leg as an overnight.
Tip: if you can only climb once, choose Cerro Pan de Azúcar on a clear morning. See the Uruguay attraction tours page for indoor options when the weather turns.
