Gdańsk on Foot: Morning to Night Routes
Start the Royal Way at 08:00 and you reach Długi Targ before the cruise queues form. Walking Gdańsk works best as a day with four stages, each on its own stretch of paving.
Morning: the Royal Way
Enter through the Upland Gate and pass the Golden Gate, then walk down Długa past the tall merchant houses and the Main Town Hall. Long Market, Długi Targ, opens out in front of Neptune’s Fountain and Artus Court, and the Green Gate lets you out onto the river. The walk is free at any hour. Book a guided walk on GetYourGuide if you want the history told as you go. Most of the street is rebuilt, since around 90 percent of the Main Town was destroyed in March 1945.
Midday: Mariacka and Piwna
From St Mary’s Gate on the river, climb ulica Mariacka between raised stone terraces and carved rain spouts. Amber shops fill the ground floors and cellars. Walk once around the brick bulk of St Mary’s Basilica, then take ulica Piwna, where the city’s brewers once lived, as far as the Great Armoury. A milk bar (bar mleczny) nearby makes a cheap lunch stop.
Afternoon: the quay and Granary Island
Follow Długie Pobrzeże past the Crane and the water gates, cross the pedestrian footbridge to Granary Island, and walk its boardwalk. Return over the Green Bridge. The Crane is 23 PLN regular and 17 PLN reduced and free on Wednesday 13:00-17:00, with hours at nmm.pl . Plan about 90 minutes for the whole loop.
Evening: Sopot
Take the SKM from Gdańsk Główny, about 20 minutes and about 6.50 PLN, and stamp a paper ticket on the platform. Sopot’s pedestrian street Monciak runs to the seafront, where a wooden pier stretches into the Gulf of Gdańsk. The pier charges adult entry of 10 PLN between 10 April and 30 September and is free after that. Tiers and hours are on mosirsopot.pl . Find Sopot and Gdynia walking tours on Viator for a guided version.
Practical tips
- Wear shoes with grip. The granite and brick stones become slick in rain.
- The city centre is pedestrian only, so ZTM trams and buses stop outside it. A single ticket is 4.80 PLN and valid 75 minutes.
- Keep a layer in your bag, because wind off the water is chilly in any season.
- Drinking in the street is illegal in Poland, with a 100 PLN fine on the spot.
- After dark, promoters on Długa and Długi Targ offer free shots to lure visitors into basement clubs. Walk past them.
If it rains
Move the Mariacka stage indoors at the Amber Museum in the Great Mill, 37 PLN regular and 26 PLN reduced, open 10:00-18:00 and closed on Tuesday. Artus Court on Długi Targ is 26 PLN and 19 PLN. Monday is free at the Museum of Gdańsk branches. The sixth-floor deck at the European Solidarity Centre is free but only in decent weather.
The verdict
If you only have half a day, combine the morning and midday stages. The Royal Way and Mariacka are close together, and the quay makes a natural finish. Sopot is best as a separate evening. For the sights along the way, see the sightseeing guide .
Before you go
Charge your phone before you start. Buying a ZTM ticket on the Jakdojade app is faster than finding a kiosk.
