Gdańsk Day Trips by Train and Water Tram
Most Gdańsk day trips begin the same way, at a yellow validator machine on a station platform. Paper tickets for the SKM commuter railway must be stamped there before you board, and an unstamped ticket can bring a fine. App tickets from Jakdojade work without stamping because they activate when bought.
Sopot and Gdynia on the SKM
The SKM line links Gdańsk Główny, Wrzeszcz, Oliwa, Sopot and Gdynia Główna. Trains run every 7 to 15 minutes in the day and take about 20 minutes to Sopot and about 35 minutes to Gdynia. Expect to pay about 6.50 PLN to Sopot and 9 to 10 PLN to Gdynia, and check skm.pkp.pl for the current timetable.
In Sopot, the wooden pier charges only between 10 April and 30 September. The tariff has adult, child, senior and family tiers, with under-threes free. From 1 October entry is free, and mosirsopot.pl lists the hours. In Gdynia, the Emigration Museum fills the 1933 Marine Transit Terminal, and the southern pier is where the ORP Błyskawica destroyer and the sailing ship Dar Pomorza are moored.
Malbork by train
Regional and Intercity services run from Gdańsk Główny to Malbork roughly every half hour, and the castle is a flat 15-minute walk from the station. The spring-summer tariff, from 25 April to 30 September, is 80 PLN regular and 60 PLN reduced for the Historical route, and 35 PLN and 25 PLN for the shorter Grounds route. On Mondays entry is free but limited to the grounds. Timetables are on intercity.pl , and castle tickets on zamek.malbork.pl . Find Malbork Castle tickets and tours on Viator if you want transport and entry bundled.
Hel by water tram or train
Hel is about 100 km away, and driving or taking the train takes 2 to 2.5 hours each way. The water tram from the Długie Pobrzęże quay runs in season and takes about 1h50, with 2026 fares reported near 30 PLN regular and 18 PLN reduced. Check zegluga.pl for the schedule. Once there, the Fokarium cares for Baltic grey seals. It opens daily at 10:00, closing at 16:00 from October to April, at 17:00 in May, June and September, and at 18:00 in July and August. Feedings are at 11:00 and 14:00 in the quieter months. Search Hel Peninsula tours on GetYourGuide for organised alternatives.
Sobieszewo Island for nature
Sobieszewo is a protected area with bird reserves and quiet beaches, reachable by city bus from the main station. Treat the beach with care: rip currents form near breakwaters, red flags ban swimming, and algae can close the beach in late summer.

The verdict
Malbork gives the most for the time and is the best single trip. Sopot and Gdynia can be combined in one day with the SKM. Hel only works with an early start, so look at the last return before you commit. For longer stays, see the multi-day trips guide , or return to the Gdańsk overview .
Before you go
Set a phone alarm for your return train, because the last Hel departures leave earlier than most visitors expect.
