Krakow Romantic Getaways Without the Big Spend

The best view in Kraków for two people costs nothing: Wawel across the water from the Bernatek footbridge at dusk, with Jerzy Kędziora’s balancing acrobat sculptures suspended overhead. It is a fifteen-minute riverbank walk from the castle, it is at its best as the light goes, and it is empty at seven in the morning. Almost everything else worth doing here as a couple sits under 40 PLN a head.

An evening on the water, from the Wawel pier
AQUA FUN has run Vistula cruises since 2005, March to November, from the pier at Bulwar Czerwieński 3 below Wawel, with day and evening departures across the 20 km navigable stretch. The fleet runs from the Sobieski, taking up to 100, down to the small catamaran George, which takes twelve and is the one to ask about for two people. Schedules on rejsy.krakow.pl . There is a longer version. A five-hour cruise runs out to Tyniec and its Benedictine abbey, which sits on a limestone bluff over the river about 12 km south-west. The abbey’s outer courtyard is free from 6:00 to 22:00 and the interiors start at 7 PLN, so an afternoon there costs a boat ticket and very little else. It is also reachable by bus 112 from Rondo Grunwaldzkie in 25 minutes or by a dedicated riverside cycle path.
Krakow’s romantic register is a cellar, not a rooftop
Brick vaults and candles are what this city actually has, and they are cheap. Singer on Plac Nowy in Kazimierz has been open since the early 1990s and is the district’s original: dim, candlelit, tables made from old sewing machines. Alchemia a few doors along is a café by day and a live-music basement by night. In the Old Town, Piwnica pod Baranami at Rynek Główny 27/28 is the historic one, founded in 1956 by Piotr Skrzynecki as a literary cabaret in a tavern space dating to the 15th or 16th century, and still operating.
Rooftops exist and cost more. Forum Przestrzenie, in the converted Soviet-era Forum Hotel on the Podgórze bank, looks straight across the river at Wawel, and Forum Panorama reopened on the same site after more than twenty years shut, adding a restaurant, bar and garden patio over the Old Town skyline.
Which viewpoint is worth paying for?
The Town Hall Tower, at 22 / 16 PLN and free on Mondays, gives the best angle over Rynek Główny and the Cloth Hall roofline for the least money. The Sigismund Bell climb is already inside the 26 PLN Wawel Cathedral ticket, so if you were going in anyway it costs nothing extra. Kościuszko Mound at 34 / 26 PLN, open daily 9:00 to 18:30, is the one that turns 360 degrees and reaches the Tatras on a clear day; details on kopieckosciuszki.pl . Piłsudski Mound inside Las Wolski is free and unstaffed, and it is a forest view rather than a city one.
Two cafes that have been doing this for a century
Jama Michalika opened in 1895 and was the birthplace of Poland’s first literary cabaret, the Zielony Balonik of 1905 to 1915. Café Noworolski sits on the ground floor of the Cloth Hall, on the square itself. They were rivals for the city’s artist and professor set and they are still the two best rooms in Kraków to sit in for an hour with a coffee and no plan.
For dinner on a budget, Kazimierz beats the square on price and atmosphere at the same time. Kraków’s Bib Gourmand list runs to Folga on Plac Nowy, NOAH in Kazimierz, MOLÁM in Piasek and, new for 2026, Nat Bistro and Bufet KRK. The splurge, if you want one, is Bottiglieria 1881 on Bocheńska Street, at 290 PLN for five courses or 360 for seven at weekends. Pay in złoty everywhere: places advertising that they take euros use their own rate, generally 10 to 13 percent worse than the market one.
Horse-drawn carriages, and the rule you should know first
The carriages on Rynek Główny are still running. A 2026 council proposal to replace them with electric vehicles was rejected, 20 votes to 14 with four abstentions, and the argument has gone on for years. The city’s welfare rule is concrete: when the thermometer on the Cloth Hall reads above 28°C, carriages are barred from the main rank between 12:00 and 18:00.

Two seasonal evenings worth planning around
The Rynek Główny Christmas market, which the square has hosted in some form since the 14th century, sells grzaniec galicyjski, mulled wine with cloves, cinnamon and orange, in souvenir ceramic mugs you keep. Wianki, the midsummer wreath festival, takes over the Vistula bank below Wawel. Both move by a few days from year to year, so confirm the current year’s dates before you book flights around either.
Go up the Town Hall Tower on a Monday, when it is free, and be on the Bernatek footbridge for sunset the same evening. That is the two best views in Kraków on one day for nothing, and the walk between them runs the length of the Planty.
