Planning Several Days in Warsaw
Poland’s rail network radiates out from Warszawa Centralna, which makes the capital a natural hub for a longer trip rather than just a first or last stop.
Krakow and Wieliczka, 3-4 days
The Pendolino covers the 2h 20m south in one seat for roughly 170 PLN each way, well ahead of the 3-hour-plus standard Intercity trains. In Kraków: Wawel Castle, the UNESCO Old Town, the Kazimierz Jewish quarter, and a half-day at the Wieliczka Salt Mine. Tri-City and Malbork Castle, 3-4 days
A Pendolino north reaches Gdańsk in about 2h 30m. The European Solidarity Centre and the Museum of the Second World War anchor the city itself; Sopot’s pier is a short local train away, and the Teutonic brick fortress at Malbork, the largest castle by land area anywhere, fits well on the return leg.
Białowieża National Park, 2-3 days
220 km east, the last stretch of primary lowland temperate forest in Europe and home to wild European bison roaming a strictly protected reserve. Reach it by train to Hajnówka, then a local bus or rental car; a licensed guide is required inside the strict reserve, which is how the park stays protected.
Masurian Lakes, 3-4 days
About a three-hour drive or train north to Giżycko or Mikołajki puts you in Poland’s lake district, good for sailing and canoeing at a pace neither Warsaw nor Kraków offer. Best from late spring through early autumn.
Toruń and Poznań, 3 days
A westbound loop on the E20 rail line connects Warsaw with Gothic-brick Toruń, Copernicus’s birthplace, and Renaissance Poznań. Both cities work better as overnight stops than day trips given the rail time involved.
Fit it around Warsaw itself
None of the routes above need to eat into time inside the capital. Warsaw itself easily fills 2-3 days before you head out: the Old Town and Royal Route on foot, a museum day split between the Royal Castle and either POLIN or the Warsaw Uprising Museum, and an afternoon in Łazienki Park or across the river in Praga. Build the out-of-town leg as an addition to that base rather than a replacement for it, and keep the Złoty, not the euro, in mind when budgeting either leg; Poland has no adopted-euro date.

Book Pendolino seats through intercity.pl a few days ahead for Friday and Sunday departures; the Kraków and Gdańsk routes sell out faster than the slower Intercity alternatives.
