Gdańsk Sights: Free Views and Ticketed Rooms
Gdańsk’s best views cost nothing, and its best rooms cost between 23 and 37 PLN. Sorted by price, the main sights show how many tickets a visit really needs.
Free views
The sixth-floor observation deck at the European Solidarity Centre, at Plac Solidarności 1, looks over the shipyard cranes and is free in good weather. Between October and April the centre opens 10:00-17:00 on Monday and Wednesday to Friday, 10:00-18:00 on weekends, and closes on Tuesday. In summer it opens daily with longer hours. See ecs.gda.pl .
Gradowa Hill, behind the main station, is free to climb and its terraces overlook the Main Town’s church spires and the shipyard. The Royal Way, from the Golden Gate along Długa to the Green Gate, is a public street at any hour.
The tower with a view
St Mary’s Basilica has a climb of about 400 steps through brick vaults to a platform with views across the Tricity and the bay. The tower opens in the warmer months, and prices and hours are at bazylikamariacka.gdansk.pl . The brick church itself was begun in 1379 and finished in 1502, and its astronomical clock dates from 1464 to 1470.
Ticketed rooms
- The Crane, on the Motława quay, is 23 PLN regular and 17 PLN reduced. It was built in 1442 to 1444 and reopened in April 2024. Wednesday 13:00-17:00 is free, and the combined pass with the Maritime Culture Centre is 36 PLN or 27 PLN. See nmm.pl .
- Artus Court, on Długi Targ, is 26 PLN and 19 PLN, with a 70 PLN family ticket. Its stove is 11 metres tall and tiled with painted ceramic.
- The Main Town Hall’s Red Hall, on Długa, costs the same 26 PLN and 19 PLN and has a gilded ceiling with 25 paintings from 1608.
- The Amber Museum, in the Great Mill at ul. Wielkie Młyny 16, is 37 PLN and 26 PLN and open 10:00-18:00.
The Museum of Gdańsk branches are free on Monday and closed on Tuesday. Check muzeumgdansk.pl for hours and the 90-day pass. See Gdańsk sightseeing tours on GetYourGuide if you want a guide to explain the buildings.
The rebuilt look
Most of what you see in the Main Town was reconstructed after March 1945, when about 90 percent of it was destroyed. Restorers in the 1950s and 1960s modelled the gables on Dutch and Flemish merchant houses, so the streets are careful reconstruction rather than untouched medieval fabric.
Neptune and Mariacka
Neptune’s Fountain stands on Długi Targ, in front of Artus Court, and was cast in bronze in 1615. A short walk away, ulica Mariacka has stone terraces and rain spouts carved as animals, and it is the best street for photographs in soft evening light. Search Gdańsk photo and Old Town walks on Viator for guided versions.
When the weather turns
The ECS deck and Gradowa Hill terraces depend on clear air, so keep the Red Hall and the Amber Museum as indoor options. Artus Court is 26 PLN regular and 19 PLN reduced. Monday suits an all-indoor day because the branches are free.
The verdict
The best value is the free ECS deck, followed by the Crane on a Wednesday afternoon. The best single interior is the Red Hall. For amber, go to the Great Mill. A full walking sequence is in the walking tours guide .
Before you go
If you plan to climb St Mary’s tower, go on a clear morning, because the platform is exposed and the views vanish in haze.
