Family Days in Gdańsk and Sopot
A 20-minute train ride takes a family from the cobbled Main Town to a wooden pier over the Baltic. The coast and the castle make good outdoor days, with a few museums for wet afternoons.
A day in Sopot
The SKM from Gdańsk Główny runs every 7 to 15 minutes and takes about 20 minutes. Stamp paper tickets before boarding. On arrival, walk down the pedestrian street Monciak to the Crooked House, whose warped walls often make children laugh, then continue to the pier. From 10 April to 30 September the pier has tiered tickets: adult 10 PLN, child 3 to 16 years 5 PLN, senior 8 PLN, a family ticket at 21 to 23 PLN, and under-threes free. It is free outside that season. See mosirsopot.pl for hours.
If your children paddle, read the lifeguard flags. Red means no entering the water, white means supervised swimming, and a missing flag means no lifeguard. Rip currents form near breakwaters, and warm spells in late summer can bring algae blooms that close beaches. The sea tops out near 17 to 19 degrees Celsius. Search Sopot and Gdańsk family day tours on Viator if you want a ready-made plan.
Malbork Castle
The big brick fortress is about half an hour by train, and the Grounds route suits children best at 35 PLN regular and 25 PLN reduced, taking about an hour and a half. The Historical route is 80 PLN and 60 PLN, with a family ticket and free entry for under-sevens. The audio guide comes in 12 languages. Mondays are free for the grounds. Book at zamek.malbork.pl , since the castle admits about 500 people an hour.
Gdańsk Zoo in Oliwa
The zoo at ul. Karwieńska 3 spreads over 125 hectares of forest and has more than 160 species, including elephants, giraffes and lions. Ride the SKM to Gdańsk Oliwa and continue by local bus or taxi. Prices and bus lines are on zoo.gda.pl . Bring comfortable shoes and plan a full morning.
Wet-weather backups
The Hevelianum science centre at ul. Gradowa 6 sits in old fortifications behind the main station, with hands-on experiments and a planetarium. The walk up Gradowa Hill is free, and the terraces overlook the Main Town spires. Hours vary, so confirm on hevelianum.pl . The Amber Museum in the Great Mill at ul. Wielkie Młyny 16 offers a 99 PLN family ticket, is free on Monday and closes on Tuesday. The Sołdek ship on Ołowianka Island lets children explore a real engine room.
Eating and getting around
Milk bars (bar mleczny) serve soup and dumplings at low prices and welcome families. Single ZTM tickets cost 4.80 PLN for 75 minutes, reduced 2.40 PLN, and a 24-hour ticket is 22 PLN or 11 PLN reduced. From Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport, the train to Wrzeszcz takes 20 to 25 minutes for 5.40 PLN, with an SKM link on to the main station.
The verdict
For one big day, choose Malbork’s grounds route. For a relaxed day, pick Sopot. The zoo works as a full outdoor day when the weather is dry. For other ideas, read the sightseeing guide .
Before you go
Strollers cope poorly with the Main Town’s cobbles, so a carrier is easier. Pack a layer for the Baltic wind, even in summer.
