Tanzania Romantic Escapes: Balloons, Dhows, Sand
Travel advisory: The US State Department currently urges reconsidering travel to Tanzania. The UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel within 20 km of the border with Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province, which is far from the lodges and beaches below. See the US State Department and UK FCDO pages before booking.
Romance in Tanzania is about timing: the first light over a plain, the low tide on a sandbar, the last hour before dinner. Plan the trip around those moments and the details follow.
Dawn: the balloon
A shared sunrise flight over the Serengeti was listed at USD 599 per person in 2026. You drift for about an hour above the herds and land for a champagne breakfast. Children from 7 can fly, but this is mostly a couple’s outing, and park fees are not included. Launch areas change by season: Central Serengeti all year, Western and Northern areas from June to October, and Ndutu from 20 December to 31 March. Booking details are at Serengeti Balloon Safaris .
Midday: a private camp
Fly-in camps and tented lodges give seclusion. Top-end prices start from about USD 1,000 per night. Scheduled flights beat charters on cost and run with Coastal Aviation and others. The road from Arusha to Seronera is about 8 to 9 hours, so flying saves a day. Gates for park fees accept cards or e-payment only.
Low tide: Zanzibar sandbars
On the south-east coast, Paje and Jambiani flood and drain with the tide, leaving long sandbars at low water where seaweed farmers tend their lines. On the north coast, Nungwi and Kendwa are the better places for swimming at any tide. The Rock restaurant, perched on a coral outcrop that the sea surrounds at high tide, is reported at USD 70 to 140 for a seafood dinner for two.
Sunset: dhow and reef
Sunset dhow cruises and Mnemba reef snorkel trips leave from the north coast. Expect a marine reserve fee of about USD 20 per person on top of the tour. Mnemba island itself is private, so snorkelling happens on the reef alongside it.
A date for the diary
Sauti za Busara, the live music festival in Stone Town’s Old Fort, runs 19 to 21 March 2027. Book rooms well ahead if you plan to attend. Compare options on Booking.com .
Manners and discretion
Zanzibar is a conservative Muslim society. Cover shoulders and knees in Stone Town and villages, and keep beachwear for beaches. Public displays of affection should be modest, and the UK government warns that same-sex couples can be arrested for kissing or holding hands in public.
Before you fly
- E-visa and mandatory insurance (USD 44, up to 92 days, one policy covering the mainland and Zanzibar).
- Malaria precautions below about 1,800 m.
- No plastic carrier bags: they are banned.
Use the 2-day itinerary for pacing, or the sightseeing page for views.
Verdict: the balloon is the splurge worth making, and the beach is better kept low-key.
