Mecca Walks by the Clock: Dawn and Dusk Routes
Travel advisory: The US advises reconsidering travel to Saudi Arabia because of regional conflict, and Houthi drones and missiles have targeted Saudi cities. UK restrictions cover the Yemen border area and Abha and Khamis Mushait, not Mecca. US State Department and UK FCDO pages are updated often, so check them close to your departure.
In Mecca the question is not where to walk but when, since the same stretch of marble that is pleasant at dawn is dangerous at noon.
Mecca’s Haram area is restricted to Muslims by Saudi law, enforced by ID or visa checks at roadside checkpoints. The routes here are for Muslim visitors, and walkers who are not Muslim can use Jeddah’s old town.
04:30 to 08:30: Jabal al-Nour
The stairway up Jabal al-Nour to the Cave of Hira is the hardest walk in the city. It rises about 270 metres, and counts range from roughly 1,200 to 1,750 steps. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours up. Leave before 05:00 so you reach the top at first light and are back down before the heat arrives around 08:30. Carry your own water and wear shoes with good grip. The Hira Cultural District at the base has free grounds, with details at Discover Makkah .
After Fajr: the Grand Mosque halls
For a walk under cover, follow the old Ottoman arcade around the Mataf, then the King Fahd and King Abdullah expansions. Marble floors with cooling pipes, large daylight domes and brass chandeliers make it a 1.5 to 2 hour architectural stroll. Umrah visitors need a timed permit from Nusuk .
After Isha: the north side
A route north along Al-Hajun Street leads from the mosque’s northern side to Jannat al-Mu’alla, where Khadijah and early companions are buried. The walk is usually quoted at about 1.5 km and 20 to 25 minutes. Visitors stay quiet, and photographing graves is forbidden.
11:00 to 16:30: do not walk
Summer midday heat passes 45C, and Hajj 2024 saw at least 1,301 deaths in temperatures above 50C. Stay in air-conditioned halls or your hotel, and drink steadily. Radiant heat from marble and asphalt can cause exhaustion within minutes.
Getting to the start
Licensed taxis and city buses, at about 3 to 5 SAR a ride, reach all three starting points. Arrivals by the Haramain train, with fares by class at sar.hhr.sa , reach Makkah station about 3.5 km from the mosque.
Walks for everyone
Jeddah’s Al-Balad rewards slow exploration, with coral-stone houses and spice markets. You can find Jeddah walking tours on GetYourGuide .
