Mecca Region for Couples: Jeddah and Taif Options
Travel advisory: The US State Department advises reconsidering travel to Saudi Arabia because of regional conflict, and Houthi missiles and drones have targeted Saudi cities. UK restrictions cover the Yemen border area and Abha and Khamis Mushait, while Makkah, Jeddah and Taif are not flagged. Check travel.state.gov and the UK FCDO page before booking.
Mecca is a pilgrimage city, and a couples’ break belongs somewhere else in the region.
Under Saudi law, the Haram area of Mecca admits Muslims only, with ID or visa checks at road checkpoints. For those who do enter, the state of ihram forbids marital relations and perfume, and the days are given over to prayer. No leisure scene for couples exists in the city.
When a married couple visits as pilgrims
Couples who perform Umrah together share the preparation. Each partner needs a separate visa and a timed permit from Nusuk , plus a valid MenACWY meningitis vaccination certificate. Since October 2022 women of any age may perform Umrah without a mahram, with an approved group. Heat is the main practical risk, as summer temperatures pass 45C.
Jeddah, 30 to 45 minutes by train
The Haramain train links Makkah station and Jeddah, with fares by class on sar.hhr.sa . Jeddah is open to all visitors.
- Al-Balad: a UNESCO-listed old town of coral-stone houses with carved wooden bay windows, Naseef House and the Souq Al-Alawi spice stalls.
- The Corniche: a waterfront promenade on the Red Sea, best in the evening when the air cools.
Taif, 1 to 1.5 hours by road
Taif sits at around 1,800 metres, which makes the evenings cooler than anywhere on the coast. The Al-Hada road climbs to rose farms that produce Taif rose oil, orchards selling figs and pomegranates, and a cable car. A taxi round trip costs roughly 250 to 400 SAR. You can see Taif hotels on Booking.com to compare stays.
Evenings and seasons
In Jeddah, the Corniche fills after sunset and the old town is quietest in the early morning. In Taif, spring brings the rose harvest and a rose festival, with dates posted through Saudi tourism channels each year. Taif stays cooler than the coast through summer, while Jeddah is humid for much of the year.
Putting a trip together
Prices in the kingdom are in riyals, at 3.75 SAR to the US dollar. A simple order works well: complete Umrah first, keep the pilgrimage days free of other plans, then travel on to Jeddah or Taif for rest.
For a pilgrimage schedule, the Mecca 4-day plan covers the rites, and the Mecca overview gives the wider picture. Book the pilgrimage slot first and treat the rest as a separate trip.
