Romantic Lyon: Fourvière Evenings and Wine Villages
Romantic Lyon: Fourvière Evenings and Wine Villages
Lyon’s best romantic moves are free, and the paid ones are optional. Arrange a weekend by spend: first the free evenings, then a mid-priced supper, then one proper splurge.
The free evenings
Take the funicular up from Vieux Lyon to the Fourvière esplanade near dusk. The funicular uses a standard TCL ticket, €2.10 for a single. The esplanade is free, and the basilica opens later in summer. Hours are on fourviere.org . Walk down through Vieux Lyon afterwards, passing the cathedral and any traboules that are still open, which means before about 19:00. Keep the voices low in the courtyards, because residents live there.
On Saturday morning, wander Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse, free to enter and open Monday to Saturday from 7:30 to 19:30, and Sunday until 13:00, and assemble a picnic.
The mid-priced supper
Choose a bouchon with the “Les Bouchons Lyonnais” label, the list of which is on lesbouchonslyonnais.org . The tourist-office listing for Café Comptoir Abel, at 25 rue Guynemer, shows daily opening and set menus of about €32 to €49. Expect plain tablecloths, shared pots of wine and generous plates. Book ahead for Friday and Saturday evenings.
Les Trois Dômes, on the top floor of the Sofitel Bellecour at 20 quai Docteur-Gailleton, is a panoramic rooftop restaurant with views over the Rhône. Look at its menu before booking, as prices vary.
The one splurge
The Auberge du Pont de Collonges, in Collonges-au-Mont-d’Or about 15 minutes north of the centre, holds two Michelin stars in 2026. It was Paul Bocuse’s restaurant, and it is a serious occasion. Check the menu and reserve well ahead.
On the river
A one-hour cruise from quai des Célestins costs €15 for adults on a 2026 listing, with departures during the day and early evening. The Les Bateaux Lyonnais site shows the current times. The Lyon City Card includes a Saône cruise.
A day among golden villages
For a second day, Oingt in the Pierres Dorées, about 30 to 45 minutes north, is a village of honey-coloured stone. A car or a tour is needed. Half-day tasting tours start from about €100 per person, with Brouilly and Morgon among the crus to taste. Browse Beaujolais tours for departures.
Practical care
Pickpockets work the metro, Part-Dieu and Place Bellecour, so keep phones and wallets zipped. After dark, take care around Place Gabriel Péri in La Guillotière and use the lit main avenues instead.
Getting in
From the airport, Rhônexpress runs to Part-Dieu in about 30 minutes. A single costs €16.30 online or €17.40 at the machine, per rhonexpress.fr .
See the Lyon sightseeing page for daytime stops and the 2-day Lyon itinerary for a weekend that fits these evenings.
Tip: book the table first, then fit the sunset and the river hour around it.
